Boned bodice question

I am sure I posted this yesterday, but it does not seem to have gone through so I will try again. I'd like opinions on whether to use proper canvas for bridesmaids boned bodices or if there is something else you can suggest as the pattern I am using does not make it clear what to use (Butterick 6766).

They both shoed up at once here, Chris!

On tops like this I have used heavy weight sew-in Vilene/Pelon, which works quite well. I did the pink bridesmaid tops on my web site like this. Pop over and take a look...

Personally, I'd make a choice: either go with the course method completely, or go for the pattern method. Just remember that the pattern method is meant for yer average home dressmaker, not a professional.

I think you have to weight several things in deciding what method to use. You need to consider the fabrice you are using, how much show through you will have with whatever you are using; you want the finished dress to look as nice as possible, while keeping it affordable, too. I know people around here (Northern Ontario, Canada) want to keep things as cheap as possible, but still look nice (ie expensive to them). In the last couple of strapless dresses I made, I used a medium or heavy weight sew in interfacing to stitch the boning to. I wet the interfacing with very hot water and then hung them to dry. This allowed the interfacing to shrink, while still keeping most of the stiffness. Then I ironed it, cut it out and went to town with the boning. The results were quite beautiful, if I do say so myself. Linda
