Brother question

I have a Brother XL 223. When I was using it for almost the first time the other day I carefully used the stitch guide to ensure I had the

5/8th" seam. I thought it was the velour I was sewing with (which had a distressing tendency to wander all around the place) that caused the seam to be a bit small, but when I acutally measuerd the seam it was about a half inch wide. I measured from the needle to the 5/8 mark and it was NOT 5/8th. I was using the central needle position which I assumed would be the normal start position (it is the first straight stitch position on the dial). It was only when I set the stitch dial needle to the left needle position that the 5/8th line matched. The Left needle position is set to a smaller length stitch on the machine so it seems if I wanted to use the longer stitch say for topstitching I would not be able to rely on the width guides on the machine. Is this normally the case in Brother machines?

Oh dear, it seems a bit garbled. Thanks peoples!
