Can real men sew?

Jim, your poor BIL is an idjit. You have a well-equipped shop there, with some fine machinery.

Have you seen Junk Brothers on HGTV? It's a fun show in which two brothers pick up discards from the curb, give them a new life - usually as something entirely different - and return the item to the place and people where they got it. These guys have a nice industrial machine they use for upholstery and the like. Nothing girlish about them either. Sheesh. My older son recently got his first home, built in

1917, and I gave him a Singer 15 treadle (and an Elna Supermatic portable) to help complete his household. The treadle has a place of honor in the living room. He wanted a machine to patch his gear - he's a hiker, climber, camper, boater, etc. That gear does not repair itself.

I guess "Real Men" is a subjective statement! I held a world speed record for a period of time in racing Outboard Hydroplanes, have raced motorcycles, flew light planes and commercial airliners, had an electronics business for

25+ years, currently build custom kitchen and rec room raised panel cabinets for customers, build boats, restore classic mahogany boats for customers and sew!

I began sewing out of necessity. I was paying too much to have the fabric work done on the boats I restore for customers. I bought two older singer walking foot machines and have learned by trial and error to do that work myself and take the profit from it for myself rather than giving it away. I have acquired several home model "dress" machines and now the family comes to me for repair work on their clothes rather than to my wife. I find it not only challenging but rather relaxing and it makes me feel creative, and like I'm not too old to learn something new. ( I'm just 70). I'd like to find an embroider machine that will attach to a Windows based PC that a retired person can afford.

Jim, you have some fine machines there. I'd love to see some of the things you've made on them.

Of course "real men" can sew! When my DH bought me a lovely sewing machine for a Christmas present a couple of years ago, being an engineer he HAD to figure out how to use the new "power tool". So he made me a stuffed toy chinchilla and a pair of pants.

That I understand: military dad, hubby who worked on military aircraft components for years, and now works on commercially sensitive contractcs...

Those sound exciting! I shall look forward to seeing them.
