Can size 37 become Size 33?

There are some Land's End pants on sale that I really like. But they come in waist size 36 and 37, and I'm a size 33. Is it worth buying them and getting them altered? I called a cleaner who does alterations, and she said that with that great a difference, the pants might not look right.

Don't think I would buy them to have them altered "that" much. They might not look right, plus the cost of alterations might not be worth it. But that is my 2c worth! Barbara

Depends. Are they pull-on (elastic waist) pants, or are they fitted, with zippers, pockets and waistband. In order to alter the size by 4", one would have to take 1" out of the CF, CB. and side seams. That's a lot. For pull-on pants, *maybe* it's doable. If there are pockets and zippers it really is not practical.

Also, Land's End pants are probably in the $35-$50 range. Are you willing to pay $20/hour to have them altered?

Don't bother. Between the sale cost of the oversized pants and the price of alterations you'll wind up spending too much for a pair of funny-looking pants.

The pants are less than $15, so they're not a bad deal. If I'm a size

33, and the pants are size 34 or 35, would it be a big deal to take them in? What's the maximum size that could be reduced to size 33? Or are altered pants funny-looking no matter what?

Why don't you provide a link to the pants, so "we" know better what you are dealing with. We still don't know if these are pull-on pants or fitted slacks. It would make a big difference.

Well, if they are $15 and you pay $30-45 to get them re sized, are they still a good deal?

Ok, I didn't realize you were a guy. ;-} Those pants would be really difficult and *expensive* to alter *properly*: Not only the because of the fly-front zipper, but slant pockets, waistband, and the back welt pockets make it a tough thing to manage, because you can't just take 4" out of the center back, and taking off the waistband, and belt carriers, disassembling the zipper, same with the pockets, maybe altering the inseam... I just don't think it would be worth it, even starting at $9.99. And IMHO, you would not get a really good fit no matter what. You're trying to make a silk purse out of a sow's ear...

How about something like:

are well made, nice fabric, and lots of colors. You could be way ahead of the game, even at $29.98. And I think J C Penney's (and maybe other national chains) carries them so you could try some on before you buy. And the stores local to me have big Dockers sales. NAYY, HTH,

If pants are altered well, you will never know they were touched. And that means finding someone who knows how to do alterations. That is where the cost will come in. I've done alterations for a good long while (starting in the costume shop in college.) I've made that particular alteration on my husband's pants many times when we find Docker's on sale for a great price but not quite in his size. For him, I do it for love. ;) For anyone else, it's about a $30 alteration. Per pair. So that brings your pants up to $45 instead of less than $15. Remember too that you get what you pay for in alterations. You may find someone who would charge you way less, but then you would probably end up with an OBVIOUSLY ALTERED pair of pants. Never a good thing. I've had to try and fix way too many garments that were completely messed up by people who thought they knew how to do alterations. And yes, the clients always started out looking for a bargain on alteration costs. You really don't want to pay one person $10 to try and alter them then have to pay someone else another $30 to repair the bad alterations.

The most size change I am willing to make is 2 sizes. So if you need a 33" waist, and you bring me 35" waist pants, then that's fine. I can get that much out of a waistband without changing the look of the pant. But any more than that and you can forget it. A bigger size change than 2" and the size difference is all over the pant. It's suddenly not just the waistband, it's the hips, it's even down through the legs. You can take in just the waist but then you end up looking like you have turkey drumstick legs on the pants.

Since you are so focused on price, don't bother with these pants. I don't care that they are the ones you like, and they are on sale. They won't fit you. And you won't be happy with spending that much money to make them fit you. Go to Kohl's. That's where I buy pants for my DH most. They carry several different brands of these type pants. And they run sales a lot.
