Cold Weather Sport Fabric ?

My son's coach suggested that the kids wear "Armour Wear Cold" apparel when playing in the cold weather. Here is a link that shows some of the items made from that fabric.

would I search for just fabric that acts like this stuff does? I'm pretty unknowledgable about sporting fabrics. I mostly do cottons - easy stuff at that!

But if I can get a decent deal on some fabric, I have a pattern that will work on a shirt for me to watch from the sidelines on.

Thanks, Angela

I went to the web site of the company that makes the stuff and they say nothing about the fabric itself. The company looks like they specialize in selling to meatheads.

You wouldn't want cotton in cold weather. It would hold perspiration and get cold fast.

Polartec makes several fabrics that are good. Power Dry comes in a couple of weights and Power Stretch is good for really cold weather.

've made lots of underwear out of Power Dry and wear it in the winterskiing and in the summer (the tops at least) as sun protection. Quickdry and comfy.

Oh, I know that. I was just pointing out that this is way out of my territory. I make curtains and shorts for my boys usually.

Thanks

Is the Power Dry good for winter? With that name, I tend to think of it being more for hot summer activities.

You can buy direct from Malden Mills at

I've ordered from them a few times and they were wonderful. One piece I ordered was sold out. They actually called me and asked me what I wanted to do instead of just shipping the other stuff with a note that said out of stock. Cool huh?

Any of the polar fleeces would be comfy for watching from the sidelines. If you are out in the wind (what does he play?? football?) look at the windbloc fabrics too. They really do block the wind. ;)

It's a great winter or summer fabric; depends on what weight you want.

Rose City has much better prices than ordering from malden. Call them up and get a swatch of #59552 & 59520 brushed wickwaway from them it's a luscious winter weight base layer fabric. Kwik Sew #2439 is a great base layer pattern. There is also a free base layer pattern you can download from

Oh yeah, especially activities where you might work up a bit of a sweat (snowshoveling, anyone?) and then stand around a bit. Gets the clamminess away from your skin, so you stay warmer. Most I've seen is slightly brushed, too, which feels nice in the winter.

I haven't checked Rose City, but I know that Malden Mills online store has really good prices on their clearout stuff sometimes. That's when I buy it.

The nice thing about Power Dry is that it's comfy all year round. I wear it cross country skiing and stay warm and dry. It has excellent wicking properties.

Coolmax, on the other hand, (Invista - spun off from Dupont?) is comfy in the summer (cool) but never feels quite right in winter.

I hate coolmax, I think it always feel clammy. Just my 2¢. Coolmax Alta has a much nice hand IMO.
