coming out of lurkerdom

hi all... i used to post here fairly frequently oh, a few years back....then life got way too busy. i realized i've been responding to posts and maybe ought to come out of lurkdom...

so, i'm betsey. 42, still blonde, still chunky, two kids...katie is now almost 13 and nate turns five in january. one husband, two dogs, two bunnies and two horses.

in recent months i've started lurking again, as my daughter is getting into the breed show thing with her palomino, and out of necessity, i will have to start sewing her her show outfits (you'd not imagine the cost...some of you could really clean up sewing for these folks!). I'm intiminated by the thought of the sewing...i'm a quilter, not a seamstress..

happy holidays to all-

Hey Betsey!!!!! Welcome back. :) I can imagine the cost. My nieces ride and show. It's spendy that's for sure.

You can do it. Don't be intimidated. You know you have us to fall back on if you get stuck. And think of it as a wearable quilt if you need to. ;)

My youngest DGD, age 8, has been riding since she was 4YO. I did not realize how expensive her show outfits were, until I was visiting last summer, they are in SC and I'm in Houston as most of you know. We went shopping for her a new helmet, a couple covers to match her pants and the boots. I asked her Dad, if there were ever sales on the apparel and he said he hadn't seen one yet. I would like to make some items, but DS, her Dad, said "No"; we live too far apart to try that. I have made several school and church outfits, but most were cotton, not knits. Emily

Why not offer to have her come visit you, maybe in the summer when school's out, and make her some outfits then? You would have her right there for fittings, and she would probably love it!

And a friend of yours in SC would probably be very glad to fly out with her and stay a night or two. So there would be a meeting of friends, plus help in getting things measured and cut out. Hint Hint Barbara in SC and now FL

I would love if she could come for a visit and especially if you came with her, Barb. I am certain she would like it, too, but the "poor" child has never spent a night away from her parents, not even when I lived there for those months. She has friends come for sleep-overs sometimes. In the new home, she has a special guest room across from hers which she named, "Gramma's room". She asked me if her friends could use it when I'm not there, and I said, "Yes." She assured me it was only when I wasn't there. Barb, we'll have to have a talk with her DM when I go back in the spring, but you can come when ever.. Emily

Maybe when you are in SC she could go back to Houston with you, and I could fly out and she could fly back to SC with me. But yeah, if could be a problem if she hasn't spent a night away from home. Barbara

Emily-- it sounds like she rides english??? if so, i used to make my daughter schooling tights for riding out of a kwick sew skating/workout wear pattern. they came out great!. it's popular to ride in them for lessons, versus "britches/breeches" and you can do them with crazy lycra colored inserts going down the sides, etc.

just a thought....

That is a great idea, Betsey, Thanks for sharing. The ones that are sold at Pet Smart have the lycra inserts down the outside of each leg, the helmet covers I bought her match. Of course, she wears the covers only for practice. I have a photo of her in "uniform" from the March competition and I will try to get it posted along with the name of the award she won. Emily

Thanks, Betsey, I haven't looked at their site in a long time; so this would be a good time to do so. Emily
