The material is folded over so there is extra material on the inside

If you have no experience, you would be best off taking it to a dry
cleaner's and asking their alterations person if they can do it.

Re: Converting a crew neck into a vneck
Dear pkk,

I sew by hand all the time by preference, and I can tell you that I
wouldn't attempt to do such a conversion by hand.  The "folded over"
material on the inside is a facing, and there wouldn't be enough
fabric there to make a v-neck facing.  I think you need to take it to
an alteration shop.
