Converting fly-front to side fastening?

Hi everyone,

Delurking (I learn so much from just reading) to ask if I can use a side zip in some pants I want to make, instead of the fly front that the pattern uses. The pattern is Vogue 2679 View D and recommends to use stretch wovens. There are no darts in the front or the back, and I've made them before - although they were lower in the back than the front! Can I simply sew up the centre front seam and put a zipper in the side seam? Or are there fitting issues I should know about? Thanks so much again!

If they fit well, that should do it. Try lengthening that back seam! I get this problem - bigger tail than average, plus a hollow back!

Ooh thankyou. It's quite possible that I have a bigger behind than average (what is average?) and how do I tell if I have a hollow back? Thankyou again!

Lie on the floor, and try to press your spine to touch it: if you have to put your knees up to get your spine on the floor, you have a hollow back!

I don't know, Kate. That's an awfully high tech method!! LOL
