Copying a piece of clothing?

Hi everyone,

I have this old stretch top I want to copy and make into a pattern. I'm not afraid to unpick it and trace it but I have a question. How do I know exactly where to put all the notches and dots so everything matches up? The top is very simple, its just a v-neck, arms, torso, and some ribbing around the neck. Thankyou all again!

My adice would be to pick spots for all those markings before unpicking the shirt. Mark them with your marking implement of choice, disassemble the garment and transfer those marking just as if you were using a regular pattern. Just choose 1 or 2 spots to mark on every seam.

I completely agree with Cynthia. On the long side seam I would put one of those marks in line with the bust. Laura

Notches are matching spots. So before you unpick it put a clip at the front armhole and back armhole through the sleeve and armscye within the seam allowance. Use a double snip for back pieces. These are really the only spots that have to be marked, but add more if you need them.

Remember the new fabric should have the same amount of stretch or your new garment won't fit like the old one.
