cotton lace

i'm trimming the kid's linen pirate shirt (take 2) with cotton lace. i can't sew the ends into seams, so i need to turn & stitch the ends under. would a dab of fray check help keep the ends from coming undone in the wash? does fray check wash out?

Back in the sixties, a hippie asked me to copy his dashiki shirt in a bold floral cotton duck. Later on, (knowing very little about children at the time) I decided to make a similar garment for my three-year-old nephew. I cut the slit, tried it on him, cut it a bit longer, tried it on him . . . he ended up with a shirt slit past the navel!

Rather spoiled the "dashiki" effect.
