cutting curtains in half & I just cant do the math!!!! Help Please!!!

I am re-doing a set of store bought curtains for my daycare provider to fit some different windows.

The curtains are 83" long (width doesn't matter for this as I am redoing them into shorter curtains).

So, they are 83" long including a top hem (to insert the curtain rod) of 2.1/4" and including a bottom hem of 1". both hems are folded under 1/4 inch but I counted this in the 83" and I measured twice.

So.... I thought if I measure up 40.5" from the bottom fold of the hem that would make exactly half the length, and I could chop it off and add the appropriate hems.

But... for some reason when I hold my tape measure where I want to cut it, the other half seems so short that it just doesn't seem right. Where could I be going wrong with my math? It seems pretty elementary to me. Is it perhaps my eyes that are messed up?

Thanks in advance!

I think that was much more than a blonde moment on my part, it was a whole blonde hour! I wasn't accounting for the fact that 2.5" gets folded under on the "new" half. I have them cut and ready to press & sew...
