If you want adjustable height, you could try Ikea online. They have an extensive series of office worktables called GALANT which is available with

2 styles of adjustable legs - you can devise all sorts of configurations. Different types of wood finishes, too. And you can also buy your own adjustable legs and attach to a top of your choice. You can buy online.

There isn't an Ikea store near us. Is the quality good? Really, really sturdy? I've definitely heard the name but I'm not familiar with the quality. Are they sturdy enough to not vibrate with heavy sewing machines on them? Or don't you know? Sorry to barrage you with questions!

I bought two IKEA GALANT tables with the "T" legs and the joining hardware for my embroidery machine set up. They don't even twitch.

Ooh, ooh, I have to share my excellent purchase of a table today!

Target's weekly sales flyer had this great table, which happened to be exactly what I have been looking for to take to sewing shows. It's a 6' long by 30" wide table, which folds to 36" X 30" with a secure latch and a sturdy handle that conveniently hides under the table, via a Velcro tab. It has metal legs, and a thick, molded plastic top. $32, which is a great price.

When I go to shows I have to either take tables with me, or rent them, which is outrageous, usually costing between $25 and $45 per table. My car is a 4-door sedan, and I rarely drive anything larger (although I do have access to my husband's minivan), because it gets such good gas mileage. Large tables do not fit into this car, so a folding table is literally the only way I could manage this. (It will come in handy as an extra dining table, too!)

Also, I use a high table as a counter so I can sit at eye level to customers (it saves my back to sit), so I will carry a set of bed risers to raise this table to counter height, which is also cutting height, by the way.

Target also has a 4' by 2' table of similar properties, except that it has an adjustable height, so it can be raised to 24", 29", and 36". In case you are wondering why I bring this up, 24" is the perfect ergonomical height for a sewing machine!! This table is more, though, at $55. I may have to get one for my sewing machines.

Doing the happy dance,

I think I will go with that 36 x 60 size.....I just got through cutting out one of those "swirl" skirts on the carpet......my knees will never be the same!!......so I really must get after this cutting board project ASAP............

Many thanks for all the posts and suggestions. I appreciate it.

Pat, it's 72" X 30". Does that make a difference?

Oooops----mis-typed........meant to say 36 x 72.......that should be plenty big even for slippery stuff. I plan to put a layer of batting and a canvas cover on it........I am fairly tallish, so can reach over the 36.......at least 36 high, of course.

My mom was a dressmaker. We had a house with a basement and she used a ping pong table to cut out all her stuff.

That would be the right sort of surface area for me, but too low.

Nice thing about them is they fold up! :)

ping pong table is a bit low for cutting (unless you're very short), but it is brilliant for laying out quilts for pinning! I'm happy to live with the sore back to not have to crawl around the floor!
