Does polyester or poly/cotton blend make better aprons?

Hi hi hi Everyone!

I've been a ghost for so long I don't remember the last time I posted (or sewed for that matter). But, I'm in need of more kitchen aprons and was wondering about your experiences with cotton versus polyester at releasing stains. There are a lot of cute fabrics I could use but I'm a little confused. For some reason it seems like my polyester- blend clothing wash better than my all-cotton clothing. So then I was planning on buying fabrics with poly content for my aprons. But I'm told this is not a good idea. Can anyone share their wisdom on this issue with me please?

Thanks, Pora

Hi, Pora! Long time no see... ;)

You never see anything but pure cotton aprons in a professional kitchen for two reasons

1: hot stuff doesn't melt it! Poly melts. And it's less easy to burn than you would think. A tight woven cotton drill sheds sparks.

2: it's easier to launder! Really. White cotton drill can be boil washed and bleached.

The only other colours I consider for kitchen aprons are black (I have a black one with a white cat print. Cute, but mostly black, and a prezzy), and cammo! That swallows all stains happily! The GMNT has a cammo apron.

When I worked in the hotel as a waitress, we had decorative little white aprons. My favourite was one my gran made out of cotton sheeting. It was rounded at the bottom, with a frill all round and a little pocket. Dead sweet. And being all cotton and pure white, even tomato sauce could be dealt with, as well as greasy gravy and custard! :D

Hi Kate! (Gorgeous bridal gown, by the way. I was hoping I would get to see another some time!)

Yep, everything you say makes sense. Of course, I'm too lazy to use bleach so my whites never get back to white again!!! LOL. I was hoping to use apple green paisley fabric to jazz my kitchen up a bit -- have you seen the aprons at Anthropologie? Talk about ruffly edges and cute prints... Oh well, maybe I'll just buy white ones then.

BTW OT: I've been spending my year doing house upgrades. Spray painted an ancient Vita Mixer today; replaced the kitchen faucet yesterday; replaced toilet flapper and drain seat the day before; built a double barrel compost tumbler last month, etc. and so on. AND went vegan in January and my migraines are almost gone. Life sure is a blur!

Hugs, Pora

Thanks. It's a fun project! :)

Make them and have frills and pockets galore! I use this stuff to brighten up the whites. You just bung it in the machine along with the powder:

Usually restores the GMNT's manky shirts to wearable, but don't expect miracles if it's dried in ball pen ink or acrylic paint!>

Mine is whizzing past at the speed of light! HUGE list of things still to do in the next couple of months...

Well, what a brilliant idea. Scathingly brilliant. I am not willing to wear an apron - or several other things such as a corset for that matter. However, there's some shopping that must be done today and I think I'll wander into the men's hunting department and buy myself a cammo t-shirt. That should be just right for spaghetti sauce making days. Thanks, Kate. Polly

Just a follow-up that I made my apron tonight. Since I prefer heavier weight canvas type of aprons I went for 100% cotton decorator fabrics. Got a splashy retro floral and paired it with green stripes for pocket and ties. Turned out fun and it matches my kitchen. Will keep up the fun with more fabs tomorrow! Kate, I followed your advice and made the pocket a little bit ruffly. Workin' that retro look! Should still wash okay.
