dress dithering

Hey All,

Ok. DH called yesterday to say there is a dinner with all of his new colleagues next month. Bless him for giving me a full month to Freak Out about what to wear!!! LOL

Here's all I know. It's a dinner with upper level execs, their spouses or SOs. That's it. Gee, thanks honey. *sigh*

Of course nothing "going out to a nice dinner with my hubby" still fits right. I've shrunk out of them. (the good kind of shrinking.)

So I was looking around yesterday online. Found this

like that but not print. That print would look horrible on myolive toned skin....actually I would end up turning the same color asthe background of the print. Not an attractive thing. Now, I have enough black silk crepe de chine to do this. I was thinking of acid washing it to make it a little softer. (the stuff I have is pretty crisp.) I also have a black background with a tiny red floral print silk chiffon. I think I can get pretty close to this dress using the bodice from New Look 6375 D and the flutter sleeve from New Look 6370 C or D. Will take some playing with, but that's all right.

What do y'all think? I'm fairly short, 5'4", a RTW 6 most days. (some of them are loose though.) Short torso, so the empire waist fits really well usually.

All black? Black with the tiny print overlay? Seen a pattern closer to that? Other options all together??

Yeah a little freaked out here. I've not met most of these folks. The ones I have met are all just wonderful people. But I want to make a good impression all the same. Wish I knew more of the wives!!! I'd call with the ultimate "girl" question....."what are you going to wear???" LOL

TIA!!!

Sharon, the dress is beautiful, but why would anyone want that style in such large flower design fabric? The silk chiffon you have would probably "drop-dead gorgeous" in that design or one similar. You could wear a nice brooch on the left side neckline if you usually wear jewelry. We must see pics of you in the outfit. Emily

Sharon, Since you have a month why not make up both. Black is never wrong, even with a small floral print. If you make up both you have an extra for the next "nice" dinner. In the meantime you might get to know the other wives better and be able to figure out what they wear for special occasions. Juno

February? Wear red. Or is it close to Mardi Gras (the 28th)??

Ooohh, red.

with, but > that's all right....

But that's the fun part.

In my local paper was a photo from a holiday party hosted by a Big Corporation. All the guys were in suits, and all the gals were in strapless glitzy little numbers in which you'd catch your death. I just detest that bathing suit look, particularly when the counterparts have on coats and ties.

But that's just me.

Since you have some time, find out where the event will be held. If it's the local apple-pickin' barn, you might want to select a different style.

Emily, I totally agree!! I don't know why they would take such a great dress design and make it up in that print. Ah well....to each her own I suppose. lol

Thanks for the suggestions! I will post pictures eventually. ;) Right now the Windows computer (where the digital camera is plugged in) is dead. *sigh* This computer runs on Linux. I'm not sure if I can plug the camera into this one. So pictures may be a while.... But I will get there! (this may count as my entry into Joy's UFO challenge. lol)

Juno! I love the way you think. ;) I will see if there is enough of the black silk to use it for a dress alone and then to line the chiffon. That just sounds so decadent to me!! Since most of the time I'm in cotton....sturdy cotton! lol A silk on silk dress would just be so yummy!!!

Thanks,

Sharon

Karen, I'm with ya!! I always think it looks like Prom Night when I see pictures like that one. lol I'm not too worried about the neckline being a crumb catcher.....I don't have enough of a "shelf" to catch even the smallest crumbs. lol That's why I was considering that neckline. With the draping there, it will make it look like I have a bustline. (that and what I got from my pal Victoria....lol)

And you're right, I should find out where it's going to be. Knowing what I do know of this crowd, I think the apple barn is out. ;) Maybe the banquet hall at the convention center. Or possibly a restaurant.

And a velvet jacket would be SO yummy! I've been lusting for one for a while just haven't done anything about it. Of course I really think that should be Red. ;)

Thanks for all the things to think about!!!

Karen,

DH has informed me of the exact date of his company party - was supposed to be holiday party, but most of the new employees weren't starting until after the first of the year, so....it will be at the end of this month. I have always made at least part of the outfit that I have worn to past company Christmas parties, so decided that was what I would do this year as well. I will be wearing the same little black sweater that I wore last year (still fits, still looks good), but made a new skirt - iridescent green..not really a paisley, but totally awesome. It is supposed to have ribbon bows, but I stopped at the ribbin "piping" on the seams. Butterfly-type hem....will have to hunt on the main computer for the picture of the finished outfit. It ends up being dressier than every day wear, but not over-the-top, trying to reclaim prom night apparel...lol. And yes, DH always wears dress slacks, dress shirt, tie and sports coat.

I also spend my life in cotton. This winter I had a gift certificate for Macy's and splurged on a silk twin sweater set. It's so light and comfortable. When I take the cardigan off at night ( I wouldn't be caught dead in just the sleeveless top) I realize how great the set is. I never feel hot in it, just good.I'd love to live in silk. Unfortunately I'd have to give up retirement and so would DH just to feed my habit. Go for it in a big way. Silk on silk! Juno

Juno, my friend Karen always says that wearing silk is therapeutic for everyone, that it gives us something nothing else can. I SO think she's right!

Sharon, I love this dress, and can just see you wearing that style. What about a deep color under a print chiffon? Silk, of course. It's just lovely, so feminine, but sophisticated, too, and it will show off that size 6 (!) figure. Can't wait to see what you end up doing.

Karen,

Thanks!!! ;) I can't wait to see what I end up doing too. When I asked him again about the dinner...in true Mike fashion...he said "well honey you know with this group we could end up going to a BBQ joint for dinner." LOL Okey-dokey. And he said he wanted to make sure I had plenty of time for clothes freaking, so he told me as soon as he got wind of the thing. heh heh He does know me!

Good news is that I finished the top and skirt for DD's dance. It's a square dance. She is very excited. :) Who woulda thunk??? I will get pictures of her too.
