dress repair - newbie question

My toddler has a really pretty formal dress that tore along the waist. No matter how I patch it up it's going to show the stitches. I'm thinking of buying a matching ribbon and gluing it to the waist all around. Is it possible? Is there a special fabric glue that can hold a ribbon and survive machine washing? The dress layer where I have to attach the ribbon is a sheer fabric. Don't know if that makes a difference in your reply.

If you have any other suggestions, please let me know.

Thanks.

Fabri-Tak is the glue of choice for attaching trims and stuff like that

- it's used a lot in bridal work. You can wash it, though I'd be careful drying it - gentle low heat and remove while still damp.

That said, I'm not sure if it's strong enough to stand up to a toddler :) Hand-stitching all around might be a better choice.

i'd second the handstitching, but the toddler might outgrow the dress next week anyway, so (unless it's heirloom) i'd just Fabri-Tak it & hope for the best. lee

OP here. Thanks for your suggestion. This fabri-tak is a miracle product. With a $0.35 ribbon the dress is good as new. It'll last through 3 more parties hopefully.

If it should not hold, just repair it again with a new ribbon.. Not a biggie... Little ones generally outgrow these party dresses long before they get worn out.

Glad to hear it.

For future reference, when someone says "Oh this stuff is just as good as Fabri-Tac" do NOT believe them.

I know a costumer who did Gossamar - that big red fuzzy monster from the Bugs Bunny cartoons? Well, she used something which was "just as good", and she shed red hair all over that hotel. There were tufts on the stairs, in the elevator, and drifting along the hallways. Poor monster had some noticeable bald patches by the end of the evening.
