ELNA 744 Service Manual & Cutting Mechanism

Hi folks. I recently bought a used Elna 744 serger here in Canada. Because there is no Elna dealer in my area, I would like to acquire the repair manual so that my husband can look at the machine when required.

I can't seem to locate a service manual anywhere - do they exist? I tried EBay, sewusa.com, and e-mailed the Elna head office in Canada to no avail (no response). The serger is working fine, though the cutting mechanism doesn't seem to work properly - it makes a jagged edge on the fabric which gets serged into the seam and looks messy (fuzzy pieces of fabric sticking out of the stiches). I exchanged the blade for a new one (the spare blade which came with the machine) and still I get messy cuts. Can anyone help on either of these problems?

Thanks so much!

Sounds like the lower cutter is set too high. Take the foot right off and out of the way and have a feel (unplug first!) of the lower blade with the upper knife out of the way... If the lower blade stands proud of the machine bed, loosen the holding screw and set it a tad lower - so it's level with the bed. Then tighten the screw again. If that doesn't fix your problem, check for nicks or notches in either blade. You may find the upper one is blunt and needs to be replaced. There will be instructions for doing this in the user manual.

Thanks for taking the time to respond, Kate. I finally got around to checking out the cutters; both blades seemed to be in good order and in the positions they should be. I'm starting to think it may be the type of fabric I'm working with (lycra & stretch velvets), or maybe it's the way I'm holding the fabric as it is fed through the machine. I've only had the serger for a few months so am still getting the "hang" of things. I never had a class (bought the machine over the net; there are no dealers in my area), so I think I'll be doing a lot of trial and error. I'll likely be posting more questions!

take care,

Your machine SHOULD cope perfectly with these fabrics, but may have a problem if you are feeding 4 or 5 layers through... Try increasing the foot pressure.

As a test for blade sharpness, try laying a single thread across the blades, and turn the hand wheel manually... If it cuts the thread, ok, but if not, you need new blades as they are blunt.

While turning the wheel, LOOK at the blades: they *should* open and close the full width of the cutting edge. If not, the upper blade may need adjusting if you know the lower one is properly in place.
