embroidery software?

hi everyone---

we've ordered a new dell...and so has vista instead of whatever this current old machine has....

and my hubby is not so sure that the existing embroidery software i have (ok, stop laughing....pes from about 13 years ago) will operate in the new laptop...so, i need to investigate.

i don't do a lot of digitizing, perhaps because the software is clumsy (i'm hoping it's gotten better)...my machine is a babylock ellure...it's a great little workhorse.

now...i'm not in the postion to spend megabucks on software...but any opinions out there????

I don't digitize at all. I use the embird basic program, about $140. You can add to it with digitizers and font engines. It does what I want it to do.

I use the Embird suite of products. Basic Embird will allow you to resize and do simple manipulation of embroidery designs. Embird Studio is a digitizing program. At first I found Embird, and especially Studio, a bit daunting, but by just working with it, I was able to get pretty good at doing my own designs. Also, there are tutorials, free and otherwise, on the web that explained things I was having a hard time with. Moneywise, the price is quite reasonable and there are frequent upgrades to the program, either free or at small cost. There's also a font engine plug-in that will let you make tru-type fonts into embroidery, or you can simply buy alphabets pre-digitized. I have the font engine, and I still mostly use the pre-digitized alphabets because they're easier. There is a cross-stitch and a photo realism add-on, but I don't have those.

Hope this helps.
