Fabric Big Enough for a King Sized Comforter

ITYM "The only cloth available in retail fabric shops." Obviously, bedding manufactures are able to order in

1000s-of-yards-batches, specify *exactly* what width, color, thread count, etc. they want and GET IT. At exceedingly low prices compared to what a one-off home workshop can get.

It's the same problem many of the posters here run into finding quality fabrics for making custom clothing, we just do not have the clout to demand what we want. Actually, we can demand at the top of our lungs all day long, but that still won't produce fine Armani silk/woolen yardage, or Chanel gold chain...

You have just encountered the critical difference. You are looking at retail outlets. The manufacturers are acquiring their fabric from wholesale sources. Often, the fabrics are made to order, with width, color, pattern, etc., for only the one buyer. But they are buying in truckload quantities, not by the yard.

You remind me of someone I used to know. She designed fabric. She was the artist that came up with the designs for fabrics used by restaurant chains, etc., with the name, logo, pictures of various items associated with the business. She did the designs on contract, turned them over to the company who then had the fabric made with her designs, and then sewn into aprons, tablecloths, etc.

I think we do understand your problem. What we have been trying to do is give you some solutions and also explain that what you want is not "available" to the general market. You have to go to the fabric manufacturing source to get exactly what you want. AS far as your world is concerned we would go out buy the fabric that is available and find away to make it work. There are worse things in this world than seams, if they are done properly. We sew things together all the time. Many of us grew up in a time where we didn't have the luxury of sheets and blankets made to our desired specifications. We slept well and adjusted to what we had and figured out how to do it better with what was out there. Juno

now i get to agree with Juno ;)

i think all understand the problem "what you want: extra wide fabric, why you want it : no seams" we just differ in opinion on the neccesity of the "why" to achieve your goal of top bedding. Many here understand the other bigger problem of general/retail availability too.

sells a handful of 108/118" fabrics out of tensof thousands robb

Ok, ok, ok, put down the sticks, I=92m not a pi=F1ata. ;-)

I guess I just out ran the internet with my expectations. I had expected that with internet world wide sales, someone out there would have been buying factory over runs as well as a few ordered fabrics in order to fill this totally untapped area in fabric sales. Kind of like the guys that are selling 108 sized fabric.

Again, I want to thank you all for your input.

I=92ll keep looking for what I want, as well as start doing some final research in what is available and start setting up a pattern based on that. Think I will start contacting fabric manufactures to see if they do have any factory over runs or something that I can get.

It=92ll be nice to be able to stretch out at night instead of sleeping in the fetal position just to keep my feet warm.

If you lived in Reno, I would send you to Mill End Fabrics, which has factory overruns, and which sometimes has marvelous fabrics. I remember one time I bought a fabric I liked, and later saw someone wearing the same fabric in a garment that was made by Ship'n'Shore, which sort of told me where the fabric I bought came from. ;-) Of course the problem with buying from mill end stores is that you can't go in and expect them to have the same fabric choices they had six months ago, or even last week. But if there is a mill end outlet in your area, that would be the place to look.

How tall are you? One of my DSILs is 6ft 7in and has no problems sleeping comfortably on their queen size bed, and on mine, when they visit. I give my bed up to them and use a twin size for the couple nights, they are here. The covers are 100" and he is a mere 79", if my numbers are correct, leaving plenty of room to cover his toes. Of course, the comforters are 110". Emily

OP wrote in a previous message: "I am over 6 foot tall...." No way of knowing how MUCH over six feet tall he is.

A California King is 84" (7 FEET) long, and there is lots of bedding made for that size. OP appears to be searching hard for supplies to make custom bedding for players in the NBA.

For all those disadvantaged folks over 6' tall, I fully expect him eventually to invoke the ADA.

My DH and both my sons are over 6 ft. tall. One of the girls is darned near that tall herself. It's those danged pediatric vitamins, I think.

I agree. Two of the DGS are 6'5" and the other is a couple inches shorter. When we're walking, I have to remind them that my "little" 5'6" can't keep up with their long legs. LOL. Emily

I just went in a measured a standard mattress. It was a full sized and not a king or queen, but they are all the same length more or less.

Length of mattress is 74=94. After laying a pillow on the bed, and laying on it so that it is under my head and not my shoulders and the pillow is not pressed right up against the head board, from the top of my head to the foot of the mattress is 68=94.

6 foot is 72=94. That has 4 inches of foot hanging over the end of the bed. I am 6=92 3=94, so that leaves 7 inches of me hanging over, if I keep the pillow tucked right up against the head of the bed and don=92t have a foot board in my way. And yes, the comforter may cover my feet, but the electric blanket will not (as with most blankets), and there is nothing but air under my feet so that will never be real warm. Kind of like having a house with only 3 walls.

And a California king is only 4=94 longer then normal, so that still leaves me hanging over the end.

The next time your buddy comes over, have him lay on your bed, on his back, with a pillow under his head in a normal fashion, then look at where his feet are.

Sure, he may not gripe, and may be comfortable enough, but ask him if he would like a bed and bedding that was 9 foot long and see what he will say. While you are at it, ask him about buying clothing at wal-mart that fit him.

I have been putting up with this situation ever since I was 13 years old (now 50+) and so yes I can sleep on what I have, just like you can sleep on a divan if that is all there is. I simply want to offer the same to people like me as is offered to the rest of the people.

BTW Yes, the NBA (as well as many others who did not make that cut but was still tall enough) is exactly the market that I am aiming at in my idea of selling a few of these.

You know about buying clothing for them, but ask them about beds. ;-)

BTW Thanks for the Reno deal earlier. I found them on the web and will look at them off and on to see what they have at the time. Maybe they have a mailing wish list.

I had one friend that was just under 5 foot tall. She got so tired of running along side of me that she finally got some of those kids skate shoes and a leash to hook to the back of my belt.

I could tow her along the parking lot with no trouble at all. ;-)

BTW My standard traveling walking speed is just over 4 miles a hour.

5 if I am going somewhere I want to go. ;-)

It seems you want/need a longer bed, not so much the covers, which I've seen range in length from 96" to 100", which is what I use, and some up to 110" in length. Emily
