fabric choice

Please take a look and tell me what you think of this fabric for a six gore skirt. Should it be lined, underlined?

Silk suiting generally tends to be a fairly loose weave, and the enlargement of that fabric on the site appears to be so. It usually needs a fairly crisp underlining or interfacing to prevent it from bagging and sagging. This fabric is more often used for a jacket, which can be completely interlined to hold its shape. Personally, I would be very wary of using it for a skirt unless it was completely lined and underlined. How much work do you want to do, and how heavy a skirt do you want?

I think it would be a perfect choice for the skirt, but I'm not certain if

6-gores would need a lining. IMHO< I would need to hold the fabric before deciding if a lining is necessary. The number of seams might be enough for the skirt to hold its shape.

I will see the 2 younger ones for Thanksgiving and hopefully some of the others will come to visit us during the Christmas holidays.

Thanks everyone for the input. I will study it for a day or so and let you know what I decided. I love the fabric color and weave and want one nice winter skirt for the holidays. Juno

I agree with Kate. I would line, but not interline. I would go with a zippered waist (not elastic.) And I would use a pretty stout interfacing on the waistband. Couple of French tacks to keep the lining and skirt together towards the hem.

I'd probably face the waist, or use a curved Petersham rather than a waistband. Not keen on waistbands... g.

Ah, well, see, I'd cut the style loose enough not to need interlining! Something that just skimmed the hips gently and flared out from there...

t will not be very full. That's the beauty of doing you're own skirt draft. Exactly as you want! I would not interline part way down. It's all or nothing. I'm leaning toward nothing for the interlining.

Faced waist and zipper sounds good to me. I think the fabric needs to be used in a gentle manner. Waistbands are not always gentle. Thanks again for the input. Juno

I'd block fuse it before cutting... weight of interfacing depending on the actual hand of the fabric.

I'll have to vote with Kay on this.

I'd neither line nor interline, but underline -- and put it together with flat-fell seams so that it's finished on the inside.

Oh, good idea! I would use lightweight knit fusible, and test a sample first to be sure it doesn't change the hand. I buy bolts of knit fusible at TSWLTH on their 50% off coupons.

Joy, When I wrote my post I meant to say underline and it came out interline. My thoughts were that I would have a lovely finish on inside and out. Juno
