Fabric outlets, a good deal?

Hi all, I'm going to embark on a big fabric shopping trip this week and was thinking about visiting a fabric outlet store in the area. Is this a waste of time or have people found good deals at such a store? I'm asking this because I'm ready to get Halloween costume fabric for both kids and since one is a princess and one is a knight, affordable fabric is a must. I want to get satin and metallic knits, etc. I just don't want to have the finished costumes cost more than something I could have just bought, although with how I plan to make them, they'll end up being cheaper than the same thing from a store. I don't know. :)

My other thoughts are clearance bins and Wal-mart. What do you all think?

Whereabouts do you live? In the Phila., PA area we have Jo-Mar fabrics and they have some good fabric at good prices and also a lot of the less expensive fabric that you can use for costumes.

Try them all, and don't just look at halloween fabric! Pick up all the fabric, notions and gadget bargains you can afford. Can I come with you? ;)

I would love to have you on a fabric shopping trip Kate, but alas you are too far away. I'm in Northern Colorado, U.S. I liked your website-great pictures. I think I'll just take the plunge at a local fabric store and check out outlets when I'm not rushing to get costumes done. I don't do much of my own checking around since I found this NG. :) It's far too helpful.

Thank you, Sheila

Sheila, If Denver is a reasonable outing, go to Denver Fabrics northern outlet. Was there ~ 2 weeks ago; they already had cuts of metallics, blacks and other H appropriate fabrics out. Great prices always; like most outlets, they may not have specific things you're looking for. (I got MM microfleece cuts for $5/yd.) No affiliation, just get lucky there.

Copy from their web site: Annex North: Mon - Sat 10:00 to 6:00, Sun 12:00 to 5:00 The Annex North store is easy to find. It is located on North Sheridan just south of I-76 in the Berkeley Village Shopping Center. You can also get there from I-70 (head north) and Highway 36 (drive south). The Berkeley Village Shopping Center is located on the east side of Sheridan. Good luck, Karen

A fabric outlet sounds perfect for the Halloween stuff! The ones I've been to, here in Philly and in Minnesota, always have costumy stuff. Finding fabric for "real" clothes is sometimes a little more challenging for those of us who aren't very knowledgeable, since the content is rarely given, and there can be issues with grain. Even so, I've gotten some truly terrific buys.
