Fabric recommendation for belted coat

Hello,

I'm thinking of making a belted coat (Simplicity 5436) and was wondering how to make it super comfortable and versatile with fabric. It's going to be black, so I was thinking of doing black fleece inside and maybe some sort of light wool on the outside. Wool makes me itchy, so it may or may not be reversible.

Can I make it in wool and then line it in fleece? Can I use fleece as insulation and then line it with regular liner? I want something that I can wear over jeans and a turtle neck or over slacks and a blouse. Dressy-casual. Does anyone have experience with wool? I'm going to look at different types of wool before finally settling, but I'd appreciate it if someone found something they love. Is all wool dry clean only? I'm using a Joann fabric gift card for my fabric purchases, so I'm limited to shopping there.

Thanks,

Sheila B.

I'd line it with regular satin lining as you want to slide it over your turtleneck or blouse easily. I haven't looked at the pattern but in theory there's no reason you couldn't use fleece as insulation.

Cea,

That's all very good to know. Thank you. This Millium lining, is it thick enough to insulate skin from the itchiness of wool? I get quite itchy in my wool/cashmere/nylon blend peacoat if I wear it with a short sleeve underneath. It is lined. That's part of the reason why I wanted to line this coat in fleece.

Is there a wool as soft as polyester fleece?

Yes, it is. And it's warm enough that, combined with the wool, it will be a very warm coat.

I once had a coat that was a mid-weight coating wool with a Millium lining. The only time it wasn't warm enough was when I was walking to church in college...in the northern reaches of the UP, where 10F is a warm day. (It was fine for getting from a car to a building, or even across campus, but wasn't warm enough for a 30 minute walk.)
