Christmas ?
No tablecloth, nice silver or gold paper napkins. I have a very nice polished antique dining table: I hate covering it up. We put mats down, but no cloth.
Hi. I remember wearing a puffy petticoat in the sixties, and it seems to me it was layers of ruffled tulle, the coarser kind, not the fine kind you can get now days at the fabric store, these had about 1/8th inch holes, maybe? maybe larger.
Anyway, I remember it was very stiff and I hated it. Even at that age, I believed in comfort over beauty. LOL Kitty
You can still get it. It's called 'dress net'.
Same here - which is why I liked the seventies! No bra, bare feet unless it was cold, never had to bother with hair & make-up... :)
o.k....be nice....I hope my mother dances with such vim and furvor that she swishes that dress with great enthusiasm and much fluff of bright ruffled petticoat spills from beneath the hemline for everyone to see and admire......because I went to buy the second hand one and it was a purple raspberry and not a wine burgundy cranberry / color! So, JoAnns, here I come with a 40% coupon to get crisp organdy instead. Now let's talk "T" shirts.....before Penny put me onto the "ultralight board" a "T" shirt was just a T shirt to me and I would have NEVER spent the time to sew one unless it was. But....(Thank you Penny again), But for our family upcoming Grand Canyon Trip (3 weeks) I am saving a HUMONGOUS amount of money making our cool "Wickaway" T-shirts. In the sportinggoods stores they cost between $33-$45 each! I found the Wickaway fabric for $3/yard....and it is
60" wide! Not to mention the stores only had a couple colors to select from and I had hundreds to pick from. Samples only cost me .15cents each....and the lady even picked out matching Wickaway ribbing for me for each of the shirts ($2.50/yd). I know I didn't need the ribbing...but I am making really bright shirts with all contrasting color inset stripes and ribbing....in orange....so we all have that one thing in common as a group to identify us. The place also sells lot's of Wicking lycras for exercise wear too. Plus....if you are making those travel quick drying underwear (that are REALLY expensive to buy RTW ($17) they sell all the fabric and elastics for that too!! I am making those for us as well. Gosh...I have alot to do. I better quit writing..give you all the link and get on with my sewing. Have a beatiful weekend!Joy
Snipped...
Your projects sound great. I went to the website and was amazed at all the different fabrics. I am interested in the travel quick drying underwear - what fabric would you use for that??? I am not very familiar with all the terms used to describe all the variety of fabrics on the fabricline.com website.
thanks! Nancy
I was in Europe for 5 weeks, just my toddler and I, and all my clothes fit in carry on luggage. Trust me when I say microfiber underwear, but I did not pay anywhere near $17 per pair.
AFor the underwear I am attempting to duplicate some "ExOfficio" brand that we found at REI...they claim 17 countries, 6 weeks and one pair of underwear. They claim speed-dry, odor resistand, lightweight, moisture-wicking and breathable...........and at full price the ladies cost $18 and the mens cost $25. The fabric is a lightweight wickaway weave - 94% nylon, 6% spandex ...similar to many of the wickaway fabrics at fabricline. Havn't made my undies yet...but for the cost savings....I am all over it! An then I thought....why not make more of a longer legged version...to eliminate innner thigh chaffing. And then I thought....why not make the fabric cute so it wouldn't look like underwear....make a matching bra and eliminate brining a swimsuit! (Mind you the bra will be of a wickaway lycra and not just the thinner material) Joy
Great thoughts, Joy. Those are some good ideas we can copy. Emily
Goodness. I wonder how they field tested that? I have this image of some guy (like that annoying Verizon commercial) where he's hiking from country to country saying "Can you smell me now? Good!". I would think "a pair and a spare" would be a more logical total, but it's been quite a while since I've had to do minimalist packing. The Grand Canyon will be quite the adventure (just watch out for the burros). Make sure to post some pics when you get back!

The pair and a spare - that's what I did. I had a book on minimalist packing, and now I'll never go back.
