For those about to lose their access

If you haven't already found a provider, I saw this one recommended by some "regulars" on another news group. They got caught in the same situation with cut-off access.

Once you are used to newsgroup access with a news reader, trying to access it through a web site is like trying to wade through quicksand.

I would have said "made love in a wetsuit" but quicksand works, too. ;-)

When we were young and really poor (with five small children) and Spouse had cleaned up the old motorbike which used to be his dad's he found winter riding to word very cold and wet. We acquired - no idea how - some blue fabric-backed plastic and I made him a very basic riding suit. I didn't have a pattern. It did the job and he was grateful for it but these days it would have been mocked, it was so 'uncool'. Mind you, as our children grew up the boys especially remembered it fondly*. He wore it with his dad's peaked cork helmet too, that WAS cool :-) Still have it but of course it's illegal.

Wouldn't like to tackle a wet suit though ...

Sorry, I had no clue there was an opportunity to respond there. This is a bloody *&%$%*(* mess. How am I suppose to get to this group on a regular basis! Verizon sent out a notice that even going through another way but still using their service was a violation of the TOS. Which means, even using my old browser program. Using a different group, google instead of yahoo or verizon. I'm still technically in violation. This is absolutely insane! Can't access a simple sewing group? Without buying a different ISP access? I'd be crying in my beer, if I drank. Out in limbo. AK in PA

You don't have to put up with this. Go to

and sign up. It's free and you can use your Thunderbird or OE to read just as you did before. You don't need a new ISP, unless you are fed up with the service you're getting. How can they tell you that you can't use a news group server? Are they going to shut down Google? Verizon seems to be getting a little big for their britches. snipped-for-privacy@yahoo.com wrote:> Sorry, I had no clue there was an opportunity to respond there.> This is a bloody *&%$%*(* mess. i would demand to see where, in writing, they have changed their TOS to say you cannot access Usenet through a third party... then i would file a lawsuit against them for infringing my freedom of speech. seriously though, i just read the entire Verizon TOS agreement (as posted online) and it doesn't say *anywhere* in there you can't use any NNTP server or news software that you choose. it does say you can't connect to Verizon's NNTP server from another provide. basicly, Verizon can drop their NNTP server, but they really can't stop you from subscribing to a new one off their system. lee

According to the Verizon spokesperson in this story, "Customers will continue to be able to connect to other non-Verizon Usenet servers; no blocking is taking place."
