free books till 4 August 2011

Hah, I bet that got your attention.

Internet Public Library has roughly 6.5 million volumes free for download or browsing from 4 July to 4 August 2011. Obviously, they're trying to convince you that spending $9/yr membership with them is a good idea, so you have access all the time.

If you'd like to look for sewing or patternmaking books, go to:

formatting link
then drop most of the way down in the page to"World eBook Fair" and a search box. Enter your search term, and then clickon the volumes you want to download or read. Do not use the other search boxeson that page, you'll get the "need to register and pay" page. There's a bunch of stuff there on embroidery, sewing (especially hand sewing), pattern drafting, etc. One of the first things I spotted was the old Singer Instructions in Art Embroidery, which is a book I've always enjoyed leafing through... and now I have my own copy.

If you need something to manage your e book collection on your computer, there's also a free open source tool called "Calibre" that allows you to convert formats from one version to another, download internet news and send it to an e-reader, and is available free for Windows, Mac OSX and Linux.

And maybe best of all, no more bookshelves need be shoehorned into the house.

Have fun!

Kay (whaddya mean not everyone insulates the walls with overstuffed bookcases???)

"Kay Lancaster" Hah, I bet that got your attention.

I forwarded this to DS to download a few books for me. I did not look first to discover the name of the books. He said that after he downloaded 3 books a message came up for need to register. So what did he do wrong so that I can ask him to download a few other books? He also said that most of the e-books were written in the early 1900's. That part does not bother me---knowledge is knowledge! Thanks! Barbara in SC (If it ain't an e-mail, I can't read it)

Thanks!!

I have a Kindle, and also Kindle for PC on my computer. I download lots of stuff and use Calibre, too. Amazon has an amazing amount of free downloads of everything from short stories, novellas, cookbooks, "how-to-sew", and full-length novels. They also have a lot of stuff from 99 cents up. Then there are so many other sites - Smashwords, Baen Library, and individual authors' websites. Calibre is free (donations welcome) and converts formats very well. I get a lot of pdf files and convert them to Mobi.

Somehow he wandered off into the pay for it site. Easiest way is to start from the URL above again, making sure to go about halfway down the page to the World eBook Fair search box.

Keeping on the free download portion is tricky -- it's a very non-intuitive set of things to figure out to stay off the pay for it portion. Some few of the books are apparently not available for free, probably because the permissions weren't set for it. Don't know what the story is for those, but I've only encountered one instance of that.
