free patterns somewhere ?

Hi everybody, I want to learn sewing, but I don't know how to find free patterns online. Simple designs like T-shirt, wrap skirt, tunic dress... will be enough. I'm computer skilled so printing on several small sheets is not a problem (and I know someone who retired from CAD and has an unused big plotter but if I bought it I'd need to hire a bigger car). Thanks for links, either direct download or p2p !

Go to sewing.about.com and look at their list; I think it's pretty exhaustive. But if you think you are going to just download major-pattern-company-quality patterns for free, think again. You might get instructions on how to draft them, but you won't find the whole pattern ready to go.

If you are near a JoAnn Fabrics or Hancock Fabrics, they often put their patterns on sale for .99 or 1.99. You might check their online weekly ads. Hope this is helpful....Carol

G'day Si

Wild Ginger has already been suggested but I just wanted to say I use their patterns and find them great.

Another option is to buy patterns on eBay, just make sure 'all' pieces are included. I've got some really good bargains this way.

...I don't think their patters are free...and 'free' was the keyword in the original subject line and post.

'Wild Things' is their free tater. Fun stuff! :)

There are also some free patterns and pay-as-you-go downloadable on the Burda web site:

There are some free patterns on the 'net. If you google for free sewing patterns, you will get quite a few hits. BUT!!! I will tell you right now, there are very few garment patterns out there for free. You can find all make and manner of free accessory patterns, free crafting patterns, etc. You won't find a whole lot of free garment patterns. Mainly because they, like everything else, take a lot of time, effort and energy to create.

Now, if you really are interested in creating patterns on the computer, the sewing software programs can save you some money (in the long run) over buying commercial patterns, and you will get patterns that fit you much better. The Wild Ginger software is all very easy to use. BUT! All of the sewing software is designed for use by experienced sewists. The sewing instructions are minimal with the software programs. I would not reccommend that for someone who wants to learn to sew. You need a pattern that will guide you through all the construction steps very carefully while you are learning. Your very best bet would be to watch the local chain fabric store (go in and get on the mailing list, it's free) for pattern sales. Vogue patterns usually go on sale for a % off. McCall's, Simplicity, and sometimes Butterick go on sale for 99 cents several times a year.

I understand that you are looking for an inexpensive way to try out a new hobby. But trust me, you need to learn this stuff correctly the first time, or you will just frustrate yourself and give up.

There's a pattern for a poncho shirt on my web site. Look under "text files:garments:poncho shirt" Be sure to read the moment of "Well, Duh" at the bottom of the file before starting work.

Actually, WG's free ICARE program has pajama pants, a straight elastic-waist skirt, and two different types of hospital gowns. But none of those are what the OP asked for.

Hi! I think burdastyle, and Fitz Patterns would be what you are looking for. These are all hip, young and very modern styles. There's aren't huge quantities of free patterns on line, but there are a few and these, in my almost humble opinion, are the best.

this is Fitz Pattern free collection. They are in PDF and are quite good. Their download for pay patterns are also fun and funky.Burdastyle is a division of burda and these patterns are all cutting edge, funky and fun. I made the "maddy" top and I love it.

is where you'll find these download and print patterns. Burda's main site has a few free patterns for download.

this is where you find the pattern download page. And lastly, craftster.org is a community of trendy crafters who post their own ideas and patterns for a variety of sewing and craft related items. Few of these people are professional designers, so the quality of the tutorials and patterns can be wildly inconsistent, but the creative and artistic licence these people take with crafting is quite refreshing. That's all the free patterns I can think of off the top of my head.

:-) No prob! Free burda patterns are something that should be shared with everyone. I really hope they put more on their site. There's no such thing as too many patterns.
