Free Shipping Club or Nonsense?

Joann's sent me an email that said: "July 4th Savings & Free Shipping" So I thought "Hmmmm" and clicked on their "Free Shipping" thingy:

OK so this is the deal and it has NOTHING to do with a July 4th sale. Talk about bait & switch! You make 3 orders exceeding $25 (not including tax, coupons & shipping) between July 1 and Sept 30. And then you get free shipping between Oct 1 and Dec 30, 2006. They call that a "Free Shipping Club". Such a deal, eh? (not)

And people wonder why we like to call it TSWLTH.

Why? because *you* misread something? The free shipping doesn't have to have anything to do with the July 4th savings. There's an "and" in there.

Maybe I'm a little more cynical about marketing than you are, but *I* certainly wouldn't have assumed that the free shipping was connected to the July 4th savings in any way other than being advertised in the same mailing.

For what it's worth, I also interpreted it as a Fourth of July sale and free shipping on what you bought. I was also miffed when I read the details and discarded any plans to buy anything.

And I'm as cynical as they come.

Misread? Oh come on....lol! The wording "July 4th Savings & Free Shipping" are the Subject line of their email which is dedicated to their 4th of July sale. You can't get much better correlation or one to one correspondence than that. Their clever marketing people knew they could get a lot more people to open the email if they made it seem that free shipping was part of the deal. Note that it did not say "Free Shipping Club" which was far more accurate.

The wording is ambiguous, at best. If they *had* intended July 4th to apply to both the sale and free shipping, it would have still read the same, not "July 4th Savings & July 4th Free Shipping."

How about "July 4th Savings WITH Free Shipping"?

Sure, that would have been a wording with no ambiguity.

I've received these e-mails many times from JoAnn's dot com with the 'free shipping.' Seems like I got one several months ago to buy an X number of dollar amount goods and receive free shipping for the entire year. There's a JoAnn's about 10 miles from me so I just go to their store.
