fun things coming up

I have a new project coming in that should be heaps of fun. I get to do some more costuming work. :) I really love doing this. A pal of mine is directing "Arsenic and Old Lace" at the community theatre. Such fun. I love doing easy period work. :) We're looking at 1920-ish blouses and skirts for the aunts. The guys will mostly be all easy. Should be able to pull most of their costumes from things they have (like Dockers) and the costume storage. Then 1940-ish shirt dress or blouse and skirt for Elaine.

Then the fun comes. Three policemen of various sizes. (A couple of them run towards (and yes, I would say this to their faces, it's not an insult 'round here) Southern Indiana Corn Fed sized.) Buying police uniforms online was one option. But way too pricey. So the plan is to make over either black marching band uniform jackets, or see if we can get 3 black suits (preferably wool) from the thrift stores and make those over. I'm all excited. This means there will be many large brass buttons in my future. :)

Just to round out the uniforms, and give them more detail, the director and I went to

and found black leather handcuff cases for like $5. And black leather ammo pouches for like $7. They are all used too. So they should have that "lived in" look. We thought about empty holsters, but decided they would flop around too much. And the holsters were too much $$ even at CTD. :( We're going for that uniform jacket with the wide belt over the top. That way we can put the goodies on the belts. :) So exciting. What we end up using will depend a lot on what sizes we can find. There are some suits (and the band uniforms) at the theater in storage. So we will have to look and see what we can find. The only thing I may struggle with is caps for the policemen. But I was looking at the free Wild Ginger "Wild Things." I may be able to use the newspaper boy cap and modify it a little..... Too, I'll have to take a good look and see what's in the costume storage. And then I never know what I will find at the thrift store....

The blouses for the aunts should be simple. I figure what I will do is just look for plan blouses and fancy the collars up a bit. I think a lace doily here and an old scarf there will do nicely. :)

Now, I just have to get a wedding gown and a drum major uniform out of here first. :) No working tonight though. I was working on the drum major outfit today and steam burned my finger. I cussed so loud the dog ran to see what was wrong with me. :( Still hurts too.

It will be better tomorrow.

PS This weekend, we will finally get to eat BLTs!! Yay! I finally have tomatoes big enough and ripe. :) Then we get to make the children really miserable....the eggplants are ripe too. heh heh

Lovely details pinched for later...

Sounds like you are in for a fun time! Dunno what my next costuming outing will be yet. Fun, whatever it is!

What great fun you're going to have. I was the costumer for a community theater in NH before I moved to NJ. I have just (last week) decided to get involved in local theater again. I have procrastinated because I love the old group so much, nothing could compare. but I digress...

Your plans sound wonderful. That perfect combination of detail and ease of design. Regarding police hats, don't underestimate the generosity of the local police force. We have borrowed many uniform parts from the local PD and FDs in NH. Whew, what a lot of initials! ;^)

The only costume you didn't mention is Teddy's. My favorite costume for him is a khaki uniform with jodhpurs and a Smokey the bear style hat. I'm sure there's an official term for this uniform, but there's a reason I sew instead of writing.

Best of luck, I mean break a stitch, Laura

Oh!!! I did not know this. Will my arnica gel work? I'll try it. :) Thank you thank you!

LOOVE zucchini. If you see flat, white - brown, sort of beetle shaped bugs, KILL THEM IMMEDIATELY. They are squash bugs. (I'm sure there's another name for them, but that's what the little old men around here call them. I always listen to the little old men who garden. :}) Sevin works well on them. I committed a mass murder in my garden a couple hours ago. They will eat your zucchini plants off at the root. And they will eat you too if they can. Nasty critters.

When the zucchini get HUGE you will notice that they have a slightly different flavor. Not a whole lot. But enough that they don't taste like you'd expect when you sauté them. That's when they become bread zucchinis. Let me know if you need a good recipe for zucchini bread. :) I have one I love. And I have a good pumpkin bread recipe too. Love both kinds of bread. (as my mouth waters....ya think it's too hot to bake? It's only 86 today.... lol)

My largest so far this year was 18" long and 9" around at the thickest point. It was longer than my two feet when I stood heel to toe next to it. heh heh Had to take a picture and email that to my mom!! LOL We said it was a "2 Foot" long zucchini.

Thanks again for telling me about the arnica. I just love that stuff!!!

Hey, you're a great student. I'd forgotten you had arnica gel. It helps reduce the swelling and redness. Calendula will also help the burn by preventing infection and that grows wild too. It looks a little like a chrysanthemum.

"Two foot zucchini"--that's pretty funny. ;) I can't imagine any that size. My recipe for fried zucchini came from a website that grows them professionally. They said to use ones that are 4-6" in diameter for the recipe they had posted. I tried it and it was a hit. The rest of the zucchini I've grown I've either chopped or shredded and put two cups in freezer bags and froze it for bread, pancakes, or whatever. I'd like that bread recipe of yours .

To get back on topic, I'm making a handbag from a pattern called Everyday Bags and I'll post a picture when I'm done. It's really easy, so far, and the handbag is quilted. Found the pattern at a local quilt shop for half price, as well as the fabric. The fabric is called Secret Garden, which BTW was my favorite book growing up, and it's in a peachy color.

Do you know anything about the Brother embroidery machines? The local Walmart has them on sale for half-price, $249 and I've been interested in one. Goodness knows where I'm going to put it, with my other three sewing machines, but I'd thought it would be fun to have. Would you or anyone know how expensive the thread or the design cards are? How difficult is it to run?

I suppose we won't be hearing from you for a while with that large project you have coming up , but you're a joy to hear from.

Sharon, I wondered if you still found time to work with the theater group. Lucky kids! You wouldn't have a recipe for 'Cloud Light Fried Eggplant, would you? They wouldn't tell me how to cook it at the Chinese restaurant--I know they wanted to lure me back for lunch. Three words: fried green tomatoes---- (with tomato gravy) Cea

The best thing I ever found for minor burns is my trusty aloe plant. When I lived in a cold climate I kept it as a houseplant, here in the Sticky South I keep several pots of it just outside the kitchen door. When I burn myself on the iron, the oven shelf, or anything like that I simply cut off a nice, fat leaf, peel off the flat side skin with a paring knife, and tape the open, glutinous side to my skin. Usually the soreness is gone within 10 - 30 minutes, and the redness disappears within a day or less.

? I can tell you how to make crab rangoons. I forced myself to eat rangoons many, many times till I figured out all the ingredients. lol The things I do just to please the ones I love..... *sigh*

LOL!!!

I'm having a great time with this play. The very best part is I don't have to wade through the thrift stores to find the stuff we will need! Another gal that volunteers down there is doing that for me. She's the queen of the thrift store. She bought 50 costumes for one of the musicals, and she spent $200. Some of the costumes included shoes & hats. I bow to her superiority at the thrift store. :) And I'm thrilled that she's doing all the leg work for me.
