Gathered or shirred overlay

I bought a beautiful and simple pattern to do my wedding dress. However, I would like to add a nice accent by adding a layer of chiffon in a shirred or gathered overlay. I have not been able to find any pattern or book that explains this technique. Furthermore, I need to design the pattern piece. I am going to start a muslin in about two weeks. Any advice, techniques or pattern or book suggestions?

Find a second hand book store and look for old (1930's) sewing/dressmaking books. These will explain the technique, which was very popular back then. I'd scan it from a couple of old ones I have for you, but the scanner is off-line die to space constraints while the new room is being built...

Shirring is fairly simple, but you might want to practice with different stitch lengths and spacing of the gathers. To do shirring, wind a bobbin with elastic thread (see tip here:

sew straight lines of parallel stitches (top thread is regular thread btw). The closer the lines of stitches, the tighter the gather. General tips for chiffon here:

So, make sure you get extra chiffon to practice on! Good luck with the dress!-julia
