gifts

I finally managed to take pictures of a couple of gifts I made. One is a polar fleece hat I embroidered skulls onto (it was a special request and now I have requests for more) and the other is a laptop bag I made using McCalls

4531. I redrew almost all the pattern pieces as the laptop in question was a different size,I also added an outside pocket and faux piping (folded over,no cording) out of the faux leather I made the handles and bottom piece out of. I would have saved myself alot of finger sticks if I had not done this as it made the seam allowances really thick. In fact the last step of sewing in the lining was such a pain to do on the machine that I hand sewed most of it. I tried to eliminate some of the bulk by trimming the padding (batting) seam allowances off and sewing it to a cotton base so only the cotton would be in the seam allowance, not the batting. In the end I was pleased with the result.

They look wonderful. Loved the hat and bag and I felt tempted to feed the racoons.

There is a piece of platic canvas inserted into the bottom ,the pattern called for a piece to be inserted into one of the sides (preferably the one the laptop sits on when the bag is open) but I didn't do this because I made the batting pretty thick and decided I didn't need it. I didn't have any Timtex so I used both a layer of fluffy batting and a layer of thinner firmer batting (like the fusible batting) both stitched around the edges to a cotton base. This made the bag hold it's shape and cushion the laptop. Thanks for the compliments.

Beautiful work Elaine. BTW Have you been down to the Cape lately. I hate the winter because I miss the Cape so much and it's not a good drive for us this time of year. Juno

Nice, very nice choices. I particularly like the lines of the top. They are very flattering and you don't usually see it in a knit. Your DH is right about having the place destroyed for what we all pay in insurance out there. We are fortunate because out next door neighbor lives there year round and lets us know when there are problems. So far we've been very lucky. We still have a couple of trees I worry about once in awhile, but try to forget them for the most part. The Cape will be windy forever so I feel we might as well go with the flow and relax. Juno
