Gluing foam

I am replacing the foam in the seat cushion in my beloved old Lazy Boy recliner. The springs and fabric are ok. I need a piece 28 by 28, 2 inches thick. Joann's Fabric only carries 24 inch wide foam. Could I build up a cushion using 1 inch foam, side by side, with another layer on top perpendicular to the first? What sort of glue would be best? I could probably order a piece online, but don't want to wait a week or more. Anybody have any advise?

Thanks in advance, Rich

PVA works on poly foam. If your foam is latex, you need something like Copydex rubber solution.

Is there a Hobby-Lobby near you? I've found the 22-inch squares of foam there that is, in my own honest opinion better than what I found at the local Jo-Ann's. And I believe I saw even larger sizes when I bought them. I have added cushions to increase the height of several chair seats in my home, to make easier to stand up. Emily

Rich,

Be sure that the foam you buy is the high density type...I'm not sure if that's the official term for it, but I've seen (and bought) different grades of foam, and only the pieces that were very dense held up well. This would be especially important if it's to be used in a recliner.

No. You can't. You will be sitting on this and it will break down pretty quickly if you do that. Now, ask yourself this question, would you rather wait a while to get the chair done with the right materials? Or would you rather have to tear that puppy back apart in 2 months and redo the whole thing? I learned the little I know about upholstery from a friend who has owned and operated an upholstery shop for years. That was the first and most important lesson she taught me. Work with the proper materials and tools and then you don't have to work twice (or 6 times) as hard.

You want one solid block of high density seating foam. That is the precise thing it is called. Two places for you to look in your local Yellow Pages. Look for a mattress factory. No kidding. ;) That's where I got the 6" seating foam for my couch when I reupholstered it and it was the least expensive option out there. If you can find one in your area, call them up and see if they sell foam. Option #2 look for an upholstery shop. Call them and see if they will sell you the block of 2" foam. I would be really surprised if they couldn't fix you up.

If push comes to shove, you can order it online.

I have gotten pillow forms fromthese folks many times. They do carry some foam, but I'm not sure what. You might call them to see.HTH

Thank you all!

I decided to take Sharon's advice, and ordered a piece on line. I don't want to do this job again too soon!

Thanks again, Rich

Oh good. ;) I was worried about what you decided to do and afraid I didn't get my 2 cents in before you started with the 1" foam. whew! ;) Upholstery is always an interesting time isn't it? Good luck getting it finished up.
