Gulp!

It looks like my sewing machine will be busy next spring. DD is (finally) talking of a late April/ early May wedding and has asked if I will do the dress making. She is 5'2" and buxom so fitting will be interesting as I am used to making stuff for me 5'7" and A cup!

I'm sure I'll be asking lots of questions as time goes on and also perusing Kate's invaluable web pages.

How lovely that she wants you to do the job. It may be a challenge but the rewards will be worth it. There are lots of blogs dealing with full bust pattern alterations Just google FBA. I think I've read just about everyone written, for the obvious reason. Juno

Excellent! Anything you need, just ask. If I don't know the answer, I can usually find out!

The first thing she has done right is give me lots of warning. The second thing is she has not made any decisions on style or whatever yet.

Her fiance has lots of sisters (at least 7) of which 4 have children of their own. I think DD is planning that the 3 or 4 youngest sisters will be bridesmaids, rather than any of the nieces. However as there are probably 4 or 5 nieces under 5 I suggested that if they had store bought white dresses I could do them each a sash in the same fabric as the bridesmaids so they co-ordinate with the wedding party.

Oh I have so many ideas spinning round my head at the moment. Any pattern suggestions that would flatter a 5'2" 36F size 12/14 RTW bride gratefully accepted (not strapless) . I have had a quick look and quite like:

I took a look at the gowns you posted. My personal choice is this one.

's because it reminds me of the gown I wore when I was married 53 years ago. I didn't want anything frilly either and found one with that type of lace top and lace applique to the bottom of the dress. The dress was worn by oldest DD and now oldest DGD wants to use the same dress when she get married. The simplicity of the design is what makes it a keeper. Juno

Juno I heartily agree that simple is good. My own was a Vogue 1325

B (as in photo) without the train in a gold crepe backed silk satin. Unfortunately it is the wrong size and style for DD. Lizzy

I like the first one you posted, Vogue 2788. One of my nieces married several years ago and she is about the same size as your daughter. She looked gorgeous; I will look at her photo and see if I can describe the dress to you, if you'd like.

I took a look at all of these, considering them with the size in mind.

I would avoid any lines just below the bust because they make the bust seem larger. This would rule out the first two for me.

I would lean toward the last one, view B because, with proper alterations, it would fit well in the bust without overemphasizing it.

The V neck allows you to make the full bust alteration more easily, since you can slice the center from the inside of the V neck to the fullest part of the bust, then open the piece up at the fullest part of the bust, like a sideways V without lengthening the neckline too much, if at all. The dropped waist would also add some length.
