Happy dance!

I saw the orthopedist yesterday, she said the fact that I received relief from the shots of cortisone in both knees was a good sign. Since just about all the damage that could be done *is* done, there is no reason to rush into the knee replacement surgery. I can easily wait until after the Grand Canyon trip in April, and she'll give me another set of injections just prior to the trip so I'll be comfortable climbing the ladders and trails. Surgery is still in the offing, but it can wait.

Yeah!!! Happy Dancing

Beverly, wondering if carrying all the trimming boxes back downstairs counts as "exercise...

That's good news Beverly.

I hear the injections hurt. Do you think they are as bad as made out to be?

Thanks. I really am amazed at how much the reduced pain in my *knees* alleviated the bursitis pain in my *hip*. I am sleeping much better, so I'm able to get more done.

Thanks.

I can only answer for *me* and I have a fairly high pain threshold. In my experience, if they are given with adequate local anesthesia, they are very tolerable. I have now had one injection (several years ago) in my right shoulder, two in my left hip, and the recent ones in each knee. With only one exception I did not feel they were very painful; on a scale of one to ten, they were maybe a two or three. The exception was the last hip injection, he managed to nick a nerve and WOWZERS, I felt like I had been given an electric shock. I still have some residual numbness from that one, but I was very willing to have the last two (in both knees), and the result has been amazing.

Long story short, the shots are not exceptionally painful, and the benefit is worth the short term ouch.... for me.

Thanks, Doreen! Tonight, I made at *least* fifteen trips up and down the stairs hauling the trim boxes back into storage and bringing up the holiday china. And my knees don't hurt. :-) Bodes well for the ladders at Mesa Verde...

That is good news. Of course carrying the trim boxes downstairs counts as exercise.

Are you going to the grand Canyon in the summer? We went last summer and loved it. You will need your knees however and a great deal of water!

Beverly, I'm so glad to hear you have relief from your pain and can delay your surgery. I know how much you hurt. My knee was coming along rather well and I did too much earlier this week and it really hurts now.Enjoy your pain free state. It's a wonderful thing. Juno

Thanks, Juno! I'm not making any promises about staying, though. Life has a way of taking over, and that's certainly been the case with me these last months.

Juno,

Can you by any chance try the injections that worked for Beverly? Or maybe you've already had them. This is a hard time of year to sit still, isn't it?!

Doreen, They're in the future. When I went to the doctor he gave me a lot of scenarios as to injury and treatment. Unlike Beverly my problem is not that I have damage from arthritis. I sustained an injury to my knee. He's just not sure what. The first line of treatment is rest 4-6 weeks. I find that so very difficult to do. I'm not a sitter. I made the problem worse when I started feeling better and decided the kitchen needed a good cleaning. DH and I moved furniture, refrigerator and started scrubbing and mopping. I knew down on the knee scrubbing was out but did a lot of standing.I then went shopping for several hours. I needed to get food in and we had to get things for the house before the snow came. I just did too much and now it's coming back to haunt me.I want to get down stairs to do some sewing for my 4 little granddaughters and haven't been able to do that. I have started wrapping the gifts I purchased but I'm limiting that to one or two a day. I also have some shopping left to do.Last year I spent the entire Christmas season laid up with a fractured shoulder and didn't get much done. This year it's the knee and it just aggravates me no end. I'm to go back to the doctor in January so I just have to behave until them. Juno

While I'm not Beverly, I've had (counts) three cortisone shots. None of them really hurt. They add quite a volume of fluid to the area, and that's what caused what pain I did have. The injections themselves didn't hurt all that much. Topical anesthetics only.

I had some soreness from the extra fluid in the joint, but the shoulder injection didn't hurt at all. The back injections hurt like hell afterwards but that wasn't the fault of the cortisone or the actual injection (it turned out that there was no inflammation, it was actual physical impingement and the extra fluid made the pressure worse).

Oh, goodie! And the fact I was able to go downstairs *many* times, carrying boxes, makes me optimistic. Oddly enough, it's going down that used to hurt much more than climbing stairs. I've signed up at a health club to start water exercise classes right after the first of the year.

Out trip is scheduled for late April early May. I wanted to avoid summer temperatures and crowds. I'll be sure to pack my knees and extras water bottles. ;-)

The thing is, I can ignore pain during the day for the most part. It was having hip pain awaken me after just a couple of hours of sleep which finally motivated me to seek treatment.

I hope your knee gets better soon.
