Happy dance!

Thanks, Karen. I was genuinely surprised that treating my

*knees* made such a huge difference in the *hip* pain which was interfering with my sleep. Apparently the way I was protecting my knees when walking, was putting strain on the bursa in my left hip.

I was doing the stair-climb-hop. ;-)

Yesterday was the 6th anniversary of DH's death. I'm feeling pretty emotional about that still, it's just difficult this time of year.

Thanks! ;-)

Thanks, Sharon! And although I would love postponing the surgery 'forever', I know that sooner or later I will have to have it.

Indeed!

Totally understand the impulse to just "do something", Juno. I broke my foot the first week of August, and could not drive, could not sew, and could not do much of anything else that required being in an upright and locked position. So I sat, and I organized my CD collection (put them all into MP3s, and put the whole kaboodle onto an iPod), and the books, and the paperwork, and whatever else I could do while seated, with a foot propped up. And I got a load of books read, too! The benefit was that after I was finally able to be on my feet again, I had a nice long list of stuff I wanted to do--and most of it has actually gotten done. Who knew? LOL

Beverly, you should look for a product called BioFreeze. It comes in little packets, handy for carrying along on a trip. The stuff is miraculous; my chiropractor gave us some, and it makes an enormous difference, especially when you can't use an ice pack.

Many years ago, I used to run. A problem in my left ankle caused a problem in my left knee, then in my left hip. It finally caused me to stop running altogether. It's all healed up now, but now I'm not able to run for other reasons. Can't win for losing!

And that's why we need to drink eggnog and eat fruit cake. We also have to remember that the joints just don't bend the same way at

73 that they did at 13. This golden age thing can be a B...h. But it's still better than the alternative. Juno

"put off surgery" can have its disadvantages.

I put off my hip replacement surgery until October 31.

Unfortunately one week before the surgery I found myself unable to walk :-(

But I'm great now! Walking without walker or cane for two weeks now!

Remind him that physical therapy often helps preserve knee function by keeping the muscles around the knee nice and strong and stable. Sometimes just an off-gait can cause a lot of trouble, like Beverley's hip bursitis that went away with less pain in the knees. Personally, I've found most PTs better at analyzing gait issues than most orthopods.

Also in squeeze bottles, quarts and gallons. Colleen McDonough, the Salem, OR chiropracter who comes to the Puyallup sewing show each year with her Ergo-sew line, introduced me to it the year I tripped and went down on my knee on concrete. Almost as good as a continuous ice pack, except I could still walk!

Hm. Maybe we need to suggest LMTs as an addition to Sew Expo. Wouldn't it be lovely to be able to schedule a leg massage about mid-afternoon?

Oh, yes! I've seen them at many conferences, and at some airports, which is nice when you can find one, and have the time to take advantage of it.

One of the years I went to the Quilt Show in Houston there were

10-minute massage therapists. I hurt my back somehow in transit, and went to one of the therapists early in the morning, while he was setting up, and he worked on my neck and shoulders for about a half hour, then again the next morning. It made the difference between being able to stand in the booth all day and spending the whole time in bed in my hotel room. There was one at the American Stitches show one year, too, and I booth-sat for Lyla Messinger while she got her back fixed up.

I'm sorry, I didn't mean to stir up that kind of memory.

Hey, no reason at all you should have remembered, and it's with me all the time, no matter what, so don't think it was your remarks that made me think of him. My DDs both invited me out, one to lunch, the other to dinner, Friday. We take care of each other.

Thanks!

I have to get cortisone injections in both knees and shoulders ever so often for pain, especially when traveling as I did last week. Climbing in/out DS's truck is not very comfortable without them. One of my DS gets one injection in her back that helps the pain throughout the lower section of the body. I plan to ask my ortho-doc about them next time I see him. Emily
