Happy dance! got a featherweight!

Join me in my happiness, please. I have wanted (but not needed) one, and yesterday on a whim stopped in the Singer shop to ask if they ever got any in. (I had been in there maybe 6-8 times over the past 10 years and never saw one.) Everybody was busy so I looked around and my eyes fell on 5 FWs sitting on the end of a table. (No tags or prices, maybe some collector brought them in for servicing?) When I asked if they were for sale, yes, just in. How much? He said $500 and he had some in the back for $300. $500 for a whim was a bit high, but I asked to see about one of the others. I am not a collector (tell that to DH). Turns out the serviceman said he had only one, and brought it out. Paint worn, not pretty like the $500 ones, but mechanically sound.

He said he would service it, put new wiring on the control, give me a manual (copied), extra needles and bobbins, and put it in a new case. So now I have a travelling machine and can use it at the vacation place since the old 646 died last summer.

Serial # starts with AG and one of the FW sites says that means made in 1940-41. I have sent the # to Singer to ask.

PS: I skipped the buttonholer; he wants $50. Figured I'd just keep my eyes open for one at thrift shops.

Jean,

Congratulations on your new machine. I have an old Singer Buttonholer attachment. It says it's for use on the Singer Lock Stitch family sewing machines. It's in a hard green plastic case. Is that what you're looking for? I was going to give it to charity b/c I have no need for it.

Thanks, Dawn, I don't know yet what buttonholer I need. Am new to Singers and they make several for different models. One FW site lists Buttonholer: 121795, 160506 or 489510 but I don't know the difference! And I have 3 Singers, all different: model 15, model 99K, and the "new" 221-1.

I will try to find out and get back to you on it. Is there a number on (or in) the box?

All of those models can use the same buttonholer. They are all low shank machines. Get the one with templates in either the green or black box. The model # changed over the years, but they are still compatible. You should be able to find one for approximately $10 on eBay. $50 is highway robbery.

And it was FREE. Can't wait to try this quilting. I love the view the slant needle gives and the machine seem much more powerful than a Featherweight but only about 5lbs heavier and with a handle. With the quilters now coveting this machine I am so glad I got one before the prices sky rocket. I have been watching them on E-bay and they are becoming out of site. Many of the 301's were scavenged to produce parts for the FW, but this one is perfect. Tan, short bed. I need a bobbin case but will take that from the old FW I have and never use. It was sitting my OSMG's garage at the shop and he said take it. So we opened her up, lubed and oiled found a tan foot pedal, about 30 attachments, grass cloth case and she is good to go. Will be the machine I take to retreat in March. He also had a bunch of 185j's, a couple of Elna SU'[s and a brown Elna with no markings but with a metal case. . Any Ideas what that would be. A Bernina 810, and case for a Grasshopper I think.

What a deal! Congratulations and a long and happy life together. I have two 301s, a tan and a black, and cabinets for them with the snap-out cradle. Singer was genius in their heyday.
