Happy Dancing towards more productivity!!

Well, I just *had* to share this here. But let me start with a little preface......Hubby and I only get each other 1 expensive gift for Christmas, and it is usually something to complete a collection or something that we've REALLY wanted for a while. This year, I wanted a serger (not only for personal sewing, but for business sewing), and he wanted season 3 of Star Trek Enterprise. I ordered them yesterday and my serger should arrive sometime today....his DVDs haven't shipped yet.

SO, I am completely happy dancing because I have 2 pairs of fleece sweatpants, 4 pairs of flannel pajama pants, a fleece jumper, and a few other things that are awaiting my attention....with the serger, thing will get done MUCH faster, and I won't be finishing up Christmas presents on Christmas Eve!! WOOHOO!!!

It's a Brother, and I have been researching them for about 6 months now - even took a look at some that the local dealers sell, but didn't really like them and definitely did NOT like the price!! I am wiggling with joy!! WOoHooOOooooo!!

Ok, enough of my silliness, go back to your regularly scheduled programming

Congratulations, Larisa! I think you'll love the way a serger will speed your sewing, as well as the tidy finish it gives you.

Well, I've had my serger for over 24 hours now and all I've done is taken it out of the box and read the manual. I've used sergers in the past, but have never owned one of my very own. Because I will be using this mainly for business work (with a little for personal sewing) hubby jokingly said that i have a free Chrsitmas present since I can count it as a business expense.....

Anyway, I am actually scared to mess with it right now. I think it's because it isn't exactly like the one I used to use and because it came with instrucitonal cds...stupid, isn't it?? However, I've made enough progress on the 4'x6' wallhanging that I'm going ot play with it a little tonight. That was MY decision - I've already been paid a deposit on the wallhanging, so I wanted to get to where most of the pieces were hand basted down (it's ALL applique, which I can't stand, but...it's money). I only have 4 letters left to baste down, so that's a good place to take a break. Once I finish with emails and such, I'm going to grab a bunch of my scraps and give it a whirl.

I'm *so* looking forward to getting the fleece apparel and flannel pants whipped through this baby...lol...no more sewing on CHristmas Eve if I can help it!!

Larisa, feeling silly for being scared of the serger

Dear Larisa, Come on, hold you nose and jump in that cold water. You can do and you know you can. Just make something anything and then you'll be fine. My first serger project was a table runner. Came out a darn lot better than I expected IT goes on my table every Christmas season and I still am getting tons of compliments on it. It won't bite might get a little cranky now and then but you'll get through that also. Juno

Larisa, You aren't the only one to feel afraid of your serger. I just decided to buy one one day, got it, brought it home and sat it in the sewing room, and there it stayed some three weeks, without me ever opening the box. I read the manual and watched the VHS tape(this was 1989), they were not in the box. One day, a friend, who did not sew, came by to see it. We opened the box and began playing with it. When she left, we had both serged for a few hours. I felt so comfortable using it, I serged several things the next day till she called me to ask if I'd go with her to buy one of her own. So another person began sewing. I've traded up twice and she now has her 4th one, but still hasn't bought a regular sewing machine. Emily

Larissa,

Sergers can be pretty intimidating, even when you've had one before. But like Juno suggested, hold your nose and jump right in! Think of it as having gotten a new toy to play with!

Mastering that sucker puts you in charge and then the real fun begins!

Ok, I got tired of hubby telling me he wanted me to play with my new toy (strange, huh?) SO last night, after I finished hand basting the piece that would get me over the 2/3 done (at least basting) on the wallhanging, I pulled everything out, glanced back through the manual and had a blast with some scraps. I'm hoping to get to actually making something with it next week...want to get all the basting done first, and then using the serger will be my treat. I *know* that once I'm done with the wallhanging I will be speed sewing thorugh the backlog of projects that are just PERFECT for using the serger on...lol

Thanks for the encouragement guys...y'all are awesome!!

Thanks! That was last year, she was astonishing! I was not able to teach either of my DDs, but DGD is eager and willing, which makes me very happy.

I'll let her know.

Thanks, she was a very attentive and willing student, it was a pleasure. Maybe I'll teach her to make her own kilts... ;-}
