hat patterns?

my friends host an annual Derby party, with a hat contest. is there a big ol' floppy brim hat pattern out there anywhere? i'm sure i'll have no problem overdoing the fluff (a dozen huge satin ribbon roses & streamers to *there*...), but i need a base & i'd just rather not use a craft store straw hat. i think a big brim hat in linen would look better. lee

G'day Lee

Have you looked at Wild Ginger? They have a wide brimmed sunhat that I'm sure you could adapt.

Have you tried the big 3/4 pattern companies? I spent an hour or so looking at pattern books yesterday and I saw one for hats, I may go back and get, but don't remember which company, maybe Simplicity? It had a fairly wide brim which I need for protection against the sun. Emily

i think Simplicity had a couple patterns for big brim hats. i wasn't at all impressed with Butterick. too 'crafty' looking. haven't looked at Vogue yet. lee

McCall's 3044 has a wide brimmed hat, but is shown with the brim folded up. I have made the smaller brimmed version, I, also shown folded up, but I wear it folded down. You will probabley need something to stiffen the brim. Timex is real popular now to make the fabric bowls. That should work. Or there is a version that has a fusible built in. Not sure if it is a Timex or some other brand. Just ask for stiffener for fabric bowls and you should be all set. Multiple rows of top stitching might do, but depends on the fabric you choose and how floppy it is.

How about: Vogue 8051, 7918, 7888, 7784, 7600 Butterick 4472, 3787 McCalls 3987, 3625 Simplicity 5242

All have wide-brimmed versions, varying crown shapes.

Less of a "learning curve" using a pattern IMNSHO. Unless you are

*already* skilled using the software. Or have the time to learn it before the project is due.

well, i have always tended to sew much the same way i cook... i'm pathalogically unable to follow a recipe :) i have a large collection of recipes, which i dig out, look at, say "mmmm. that looks *good*... but i don't have any x,y, or Z... but i can probably use f,j, & s instead..." the results, while usually tasty bear no resemblance to the original. i kinda do the same thing to patterns... although i do *try* to cut the pieces properly, really... but then my brain starts that "what if i do *this*?" thing and, well... no one's ever going to accuse me of copyright infringement :) lee

You are a person after my own heart, and you should be delighted with and have no problem constructing computer-generated patterns.
