Help - buying my wife a new sewing machine

I'd like to buy my wife a replacement for her old Singer which seems to be getting past its best, at least if the curses I hear levelled in its direction are anything to go by!! It has been in her possesion for many years, is built like a battleship and holds a place dear in her heart. I'd say curtains, quilting and general alterations are it's main uses. does anyone have particular recommendations for a replacement.

Thanks Colin

You don't say if this is for a surprise Christmas present - don't do it! She needs to go into a store and try out the various makes, see what she's happy with.

FWIW, I've been using a Pfaff for the last 2-3 years; I can't praise it highly enough.

Men who would like to give their wives a new sewing machine as a surprise, please think about this: Would you want her to buy you a new vehicle or tool without you trying it out for yourself.

I often make this suggestion: Give her a handmade note, like a gift card, saying you are going to take her shopping for one sewing machine on such & such a day, and you'll treat her to lunch afterwards or something similar. Then she can pick the one that "fits like a glove." And you'll be there to share her joy. Emily

Maybe the old Singer just needs to be taken in for a maintenance tune up :)
