Help I am the new one freaking out about the Roman Shade

Ok, I was not this worried when I made my prom dress my senior year of high school and had only been sewing a few years. But I guess where I have not sewn in several years I am wondering if it will come back...

My first problem is the directions here:

formatting link
says:How to Join Lining and Front Fabric at Sides:Check that the lining is 1" narrower than the front fabric. Lay the front fabric right side up on a work surface, with the bottom (hem) to your left. Lay the lining with the right side down on top of the front fabric. (The right-sides are together.) The bottom hems will both be to your left. The bottom of the lining should be 1/2" above the bottom of the front fabric. Pin every 2" to 3" close the the edge. You can leave these pins in while you stitch. Also pin the front fabric and the lining together every 6" to 8" several inches towards the center of the shade to stabilize and prevent pulling during stitching. Using a 3/4" seam, sew the first side seam beginning at the hem edge (back-stitch at the beginning of the seam) and ending at the top edge. Press the seam towards the lining. Ok, I understand I will have an extra 1/2" of fabric and I know when it is sewed it will flip the front fabric around to the back. Do I fold the front fabric over to pin before I sew and then do the 3/4" seam? I am hoping once I lay it out it will all come back to me, but I am worried it will not after I will have bought the fabric. I hope this question makes sense...

Another thing is the fabrics I am looking at are 54" wide. My shade is only

28" wide, although it is 67" long. Do you think I could take the extra in width and piece it to make valances? Or do think that would look tacky? I am on of those people who hate to waste and I do want a valance.

As soon as I hit send, it came flooding back to me. Do not ask me where I got folding?! I am sorry I posted and then figured out. It had been bothering me since last night and then I had my duh huh moment.

I do still want some input on using extra for valances

Good for you on the figuring out part!

Using the leftover width for valances should be fine. If the valances are gathered, any piecing seams probably will disappear into the gathers. If the valances are pleated, you could arrange it so that seams are hidden in the pleats. Valances aren't exactly at eye level, anyway, so seams aren't as obvious.

If your fabric is patterned, try to match the pattern at the seamlines.

Also, if it's not quite enough to make full valances, you might buy a contrasting fabric and use your left-over by stripping it to stitch bands of it on each valance and carry on your theme. Sharon
