Help in locating a pattern for special needs

Hi all. I have an elderly auntie who fell and broke her arm just under the shoulder therefore limiting her mobility. She needs bras and I am having a terrible time finding information/patterns for a front closing bra. Because she has such a rounded back from osteoporosis and then not being able to fully use her arm I thought a front-closing bra with hook&loop tape would work. Can anyone point me to a site that offers patterns for either the bra pattern or a ready made bra? TIA. /paula

Decentexposures.com sells sports-type bras that you can get with a front closure. If she's not too full-busted this would work.

And I see front-hook bras all the time in the Lane Bryant catalog

They are plus-sized catalogs, but they both have sister companies that are regular-sized and maybe you can find them there.

G'day Paula

I've just bought this book on making bras and it has a section on converting your current bra to a front-closing bra. The lady will also draft a pattern from the current bra, as another option. Again, no affiliation, just a satisfied customer about to order all the bits 'n pieces to start making my own bras.

this helps? Bronwyn ;-)

Hi Paula,

The kind of bra you are looking for falls under the category "Adaptive Clothing". If you google that you will find many catalogues, and maybe some patterns. Do you live near a nursing home? You could ask the activity dept. what companies they deal with for their residents. A nursing home will often have "fashion shows" where residents can see and buy clothing.

She might do ok with a modified bra, if front closure won't work for her (velcro can be problematic there). A sports type bra, with the strap opposite to the damaged shoulder turned into a closure, might work for her. This would be a bra that the band is stretch enough it can be put on over the head. I'm going to assume it's the right arm that's in trouble here, and she can't lift her arm over her head to just pull on a bra.

Cut the left strap in the front at some convenient location. Put a plastic D ring on one piece of the strap, sew some hook velcro to the other part, hook facing out, and a piece of loop velcro onto the hook, facing the same way.

To put on the bra: put the right arm through the right strap, and pull the bra over the head and left arm. Close the left strap by pulling the velcro through the D ring, and attaching loop side to hook side.

You might also look for books at the library like: Pompelli's Dressing for Independence Goldsworthy's Clothes for Disabled People (esp. good for undergarments)

check with local support groups for people with strokes, etc. Or google for "activities of daily living" and "dressing aids". A dressing stickmay be especially useful if she's dressing one handed.
