Help making bias tape please?

Hi everybody, earlier today I was making bias tape with these directions

formatting link
my finished product wasn't quite right. I don't know what I did. Can someone explain in "Blonde" language how to do it? What I ended up with was just garbage.

I marked all my lines before I sewed it into a tube, then when I went to cut them out it didn't come out in a long 1" line, it was a 10" thick line.

AGHH help! Having blonde problems, why do I mess up something that looks so easy!

TIA Michelle Giordano

did you remember to offset the edges ie so that 1 joins to 2, 2 to 3 etc?

Yes, I think I did, but I think I joined the wrong edges, I looked over the instructions again. I will tell you now that I won't use a whole meter again! LOL what a waste! I will use small pieces until I finally figure it out.

You will be amazed how much binding can come out of a small amount. One of my classes and my DH (who is very good at math) argued with me about how much you could get from a 12" square. Finally I made it up and that made a believer out of them.

One thing, take your time. Good binding looks great, but it can't be made in just a few minutes. If that fails - have a glass of wine. That seems to always help me ;-)

Bu99er - wish I'd thought of that yesterday. Does he open Saturdays? Failing that, it's for a wedding, so hopefully it won't be worn that often ...

If you phone them Monday and say it's urgent, it'll be with you Tuesday. You could try today, but I don't know if they are open... There's no retail outlet: they supply tailoring findings to tailors. They also do covered button, as done for my rainbow bridal caper last summer.

I've tried ringing - they ain't there today. I can go down and collect (is only abt 4 miles) but I need the wretched thing for delivery midday monday. I've some soft open-weave cotton kicking about, I'll use that. Hopefully it's not going to be worn on a regular basis. They're very useful - just a bit of a pig finding your way in by car (strange road setup, and adjacent to dodgy "adult" shop)

So if I ever need to know the quality of summat, can I send you down to fondle? ;)

Many cheaper poly ties use a cotton scrim type interfacing. It should work for light use.

Well, it's got two choices LOL! There's not a right lot of the fabric either. I'm just practising to get the seam right for the join before I bite the bullet :)

Michelle, I tried your instuctions and had a beast of a time with them. I found this set at

and they worked much better forme. I printed them out, placed them on my work table and followed thewritten instuctions and the pictures very carefully. I found that using afabric glue stick to put together the seam for the tube worked the best forme.I also found that marking my lines with a piece of chalk gave me a muchbetter lines to cut.Juno

THanks Juno, those are beastly instructions aren't they? I will try the other way and let you know how I do, hopefully I do well this time!

Your instructions seemed to imply that the piecing seams are on the bias, and not slanted to be on the straight-of-grain the way we join bias tape. Did I understand this properly?

Dear Joy,

No, the joins are on the straight grain. What I was trying to say, and my fingers didn't help, apparently, was that if one examines the grain in the old tie, it should be an easy matter to line up the grainlines on the new. A check to see if the slanted ends are on the straight grain will assure that the piece has not been distorted when pressing.

Sorry about the confusion.
