help with sewing a side gusset into a leather handbag

I'm new to sewing and working with leather. I'm trying to make a simple leather handbag for a friend.

The bag requires two side gussets. I was wondering if there is a trick to sewing in side gussets so that the seam looks decent. I'm sewing this bag inside out. the seams will be on the inside.

Thanks for whatever help you can give.

Try it the same way I do godets and gussets in clothing: sew it to one side piece, then sew the combined piece to the other side piece.

Generally done with a cylinder arm machine to get in those tiny spots.

Try it first with fabric, and then with leather. Sew the gusset to the side seam, then do the other side.

A lot will depend on how heavy your leather is... If you're using 3 or 4 ounce leather, you should be able to sew it inside out and then turn it. If you're using heavy leather, you may not be able to do this unless the bag is larger...

Thanks Kate and everyone for your help.

I'm using 4- 4.5 oz leather. I followed the advice to just sew the side seems and gradually work slowly around the bend, eyeing and feeling things as I go to ensure a smooth bend. It worked fabulously but oh so time consuming.

Thanks.
