G'day Christine

Having never seen the skating show you've mentioned I can't make comment on that skating dress, but I'd be inclined to do a narrow rolled hem on the overlocker (serger) using woolly nylon in a colour to match the fabric. Such a nice finish on any sheer fabric.

*cringes i've never used a serger machine and don't want this project to be my first! i may have to do it though...if i don't find another option that i like, i'm definately going to try! thank you!

is there an way to do hemming by machine? this is my first time with sheers - i know french seams are often recommended, but i want the hem to be VERY close to the edge...

Sure. Stitch around very close to the edge. No fold, just through one layer of the fabric. Now, press up a fold using the row of stitching as a guide where to fold. Stitch again very close to that fold. Trim away most of the seam allowance. Press up and stitch again. With practice (that's what scraps are for) you can get a very narrow, very neat hem.

Or if you can find one, get a rolled hem foot, or narrow hem foot for your sewing machine. With those, you fold up the depth of the hem and press. When you do that, you fold up the cut edge then fold up again like for a normal hem. Press that for about the first 1" of sewing. Then the foot will fold the rest for you. It's a wonderful foot to have. You will be amazed all the places you will use it. Just remember it does not go over seams very well.

I remember that outfit. But I can't remember how she did the hems. I'd guess a narrow rolled hem on the machine. (she wouldn't have had time to do it by hand.)

Dear xoxochristine,

If you don't have an overlocker, don't worry, you can do a very fine hem on a regular machine. Fold over 1/4 inch and sew close to the fold. Since you're doing circular ruffles, don't press; you'll distort the fabric. Then, cut the excess of the hem away, so that all that is left is the stitching. Then, set your machine to the widest zigzag stitch it will do, and the shortest stitch, less than one on most machines. Let the right zag of the stitch go all the way off the fabric, and the left zig go into the fabric just past the stitching. This will give almost an invisible edge, finely finished, with no loose threads. You might want to go around twice. You could use gold, silver, or a contrasting color if you want.
