Hemming pants?

I'm going to be hemming some new pants which are made of Dupioni silk. (These are to be worn when I show my horse in showmanship/ halter classes) I want the pants to hang well and not ride up. The fabric is sort of lightweight and does not lend itself to hanging straight and crisp. I'm thinking I might add some interfacing to the part of the hem that folds under, then adding drapery weights to help them hang when I walk/trot alongside my horse. What do you think? Is this a bizarre idea? Cheryl

Cheryl,

I think the drapery weights might be too heavy, maybe you should check out the weights in the fishing tackle section of a sporting goods store? Or maybe some sort of a chain?

Good luck and let us know how it works out,

How about this stuff?

and the weight would be evenly distributed. Lizzy

Drapery weights might be a little heavier and thicker than you need. How about making tiny pockets on the inside of the hem, using organza, and slipping pennies or nickels into them. You could distribute several around the hem. I do this with the back hems of shirts, which sometime want to ride up and hang out on my "shelf".

Not at all. It's something couture houses and costume maker do a lot. :) I've done it to more than one silk dupion bridesmaid gown...

Those are what I have always called drapery weights. Many years ago, in my very first sewing class, the instructor told us to buy a section as it is very useful for measuring curves. I have had that same piece all these years and still grab for it when I want to measure something. I think it would be good to put in the hem of the pants as pressing the hem won't have a tendency to make marks. So far, I have only found sites that want you to buy a whole roll for about $50! Looking for something less expensive. cheryl

The drapery weights you buy are exactly the same size and weight as a nickel.

Not if you don't press over them. But I usually leave a pocket, and add them in, taking them out when I launder things. It seems to work best that way for me.

So, for pants, where would you put a pocket? Leave the side seam of the turned under hem open, and slide the nickles in? Cheryl
