Historical costuming

Some months ago, I was doing a Net wander and found a site that had some lovely historic costumes of really high quality sewing skills. I thought that I found it by way of a sig block that appeared on someone's post in this ng or by going from somone's site to another one. I also thought that I had bookmarked it for future reference as I like to be inspired every time I think that what I'm sewing is dull and boring.

It wasn't your site Kate (which is also a great site). The site I am thinking of was put up by someone who lived in the US and the costumes fitted someone of a more buxom build than Kate's costumes. Heck, not to put too fine a point on it, the lady pictured had a voluptuous bust and a full figure and she looked drop dead gorgeous.

I particularly remember a court gown that is probably for around the time of Henry VIII and the gown had lots of red IIRC. I seem to recall red crystals either down the front or as a belt or necklace?????

Can anyone give me any clues to who might own this site please? I have a friend who is doing a production sewing course and she has to make a historic costume this semester and she could do with some diversion and inspiration. Her husband has just been diagnosed with a terminal illness and will be effectively bedridden from now on. She may not be able to complete the course but I'd like to try to take her mind off her current problems if possible.

Thanks for reading.

Dear Farml,

I'm sorry to hear about your friend's troubles.

I think you may be looking for Margo Anderson. Hers are the most authentic and well drafted Renaissance patterns that can be had. The site is

I didn't find the photo you described, but I didn't look at all the pages, either. Also, look at the Costumers Manifesto. This site has costumes for all periods, including fantasy and science fiction. There are many sites linked here that show how to make authentic stockings, corsets, jewelry, headresses, well you name it. That website is

I was also going to suggest Margo. She's very helpful on the Yahoo group she has for users of her patterns.

Thanks to everyone for your responses. None of the sites given were the one I remember but I have had a delightful time wandering from site to site and also doing a search at google on SCA constuming.

There is so much out there. And some of the sewing is "to die for" quality.

Thanks too Kate for your kind offer. I will pass it (and all the sites I found) on to my friend.

Thanks for the response Wendy. When I got to your site, I realised that the dress I specifically recall was probably Elizabethan rather than Tudor, if the black dress on the first page of your site is an Elizabethan one.

Mind you, it could have almost been anything spanning a couple of hundred years given my now rather vague memories. But I do remember the red (which thinking about it over night I think was either a pendant or a belt) and the ??? topcoat/dress which went over the underdress???? Not sure of the correct terms here.

The photos I recall, were all of a much larger size than show on your page ( I think one or perhaps two to a page) but the lady was about the size, shape and grooming standard as the lady on your page (and I also seem to recall some sort of head gear but can't now remember what). The site owner went into very detailed descriptions (with pictures) of how she had gone about sewing her costume - simply awe inspiring in terms of details and skills. Made me feel a bit inadequate as I had thought that do the hand tailoring of jackets was enough of a challenge.

But I do remember the cow! So I must have checked out your site at about the same time.

Thanks again
