Hooooray!

The silk jacket is done, pressed and ready to go. AND I found a dark navy RTW rayon knit tank top (that's a sleeveless scoop necked top, for those [Joanne] who don't know what a tank top is) to wear with it, so I don't have to try to get that made.

I was done serging with off-white thread, and decided to repair the camp shirt. Re-threaded the serger with navy thread. I always cut-off-and-pull-through new colors, usually saves a ton of time. Unfortunately, I broke the bottom looper thread. :-( Searched for the instruction manual, aaargh, nowhere it should be. The diagram on the serger door is fairly good, so I attempted to thread the looper using the thread path shown there. No joy, would not form a chain. After several more attempts, I finally got it right, so now I'm set and ready to go tomorrow AM to finish the camp shirt.

When I do find the Huskylock serger manual, I'm going to scan the threading diagrams and instruction and print off several copies to keep near the serger.

And, DGS came over this morning, and we packed up all the loose stuff (in the curios etc.) in the living room, and he helped me move everything except the big media cabinet out of the room, so now I'm ready for DD and DSIL to start tearing out the carpet and lay the new hardwood flooring as soon as we get back from Nashville.

YEAH! Betcha can hear the sound of dancing feet all the way over there.

How nice for you, and how kind to explain yourself so carefully. So there is no misunderstanding.

I can see it now. Imagining Beverly instead of dad:

And it takes its name from its resemblance to the top of a tank suit

-- a no-frills cotton maillot* worn when swimming in a tank -- a no-frills indoor pool used for exercise or instruction.

I wore tank suits when taking swimming lessons at the Y in the early sixties. In addition to requiring a shower before swimming, the management insisted that nothing they hadn't supplied go into the tank. Each size of suit was a different color to make it easy to sort them. Never occurred to me that it also made it easy to see what size each woman was -- but then, in tank suits you don't need color coding to see that!

The tank suit was considered immodest, and men and women were instructed separately.

*from Wikipedia: "The maillot is the fashion designer's name for a woman's one-piece swimsuit."

I much prefer the tank suit style cozzi: I swim a lot (going 4 times this week alone!), and a handful of cozzies I can do a mile in without adjusting, falling out of, or going Twang! on me is a wonderful thing. I'm finally going to make some myself! Fed up with the bought ones having too little bum in them...

Or, teehee, could it be that there is still too much b-t-m for the suit???????? Cackle, cackle.

Seriously, the committed swimmers on this side of the pond seem to like the ones from LL Bean. It seems they have sufficient coverage for both modesty and comfort, and they come in different torso lengths. Never tried them myself, as I very rarely swim, just reporting what others have told me. Also, I don't know if you can get them over there, or if the postage would be too much.

I don't have any of their swimsuits - since I don't swim or lie on the beach. But I've done a lot of business with L.L.Bean over the years and while sometimes their prices seem a bit high, they do give free shipping and free returns, and they absolutely stand behind their merchandise. When GoreTex was first available, we bought a running suit for DH, and he wore it and wore it until it finally didn't shed water anymore. I wrote to Bean to ask about what to do to re-treat it, and they said to return it. They no longer had that style in stock, but gave me a credit toward a new one. We had certainly gotten our money out of the suit already, but used the credit to buy a new outfit. Can't argue with that!

Not to throw a wet blanket on your enthusiasm, but L.L. Bean charges for shipping:

shipping within the U.S. is $4.95.And also for returns:

"Please note that your refund will be reduced by $6.50"I like L.L Bean merchandise, but I have paid for shipping charges both ways for merchandise I had to return. Lands End has some similar stuff and you can return it to your local Sears store thereby avoiding at least the return shipping cost.

They don't charge me for shipping or returns. I have an L.L.Bean credit card. They also give me lots of $10 coupons toward purchases.

Mayhap they have a special deal for those who have their CC? I have lots of CCs but I limit my use to one or two, and almost never use store cards. I get a nice little discount each time I use my AMEX. ;-)

It's a regular VISA card, from Barclay, I think, but has the L.L.Bean logo on it and if you use it on their site, they give benefits. They give benefits on other purchases, just not the free shipping and monogramming. Oh, yeah, you get free monogramming with the card. We have a bunch of cards, but like you, we limit our use. I tend to let DH use one, and I use a different one, and we both use the Amazon sponsored card (also a regular credit card, just with the Amazon logo) on the Amazon site - because of the free shipping. I treat all our accounts as

30-day accounts, which seems to drive them nuts - or their computers nuts - as they keep sending me checks to use and offering deals on transferred balances. I have no balances! Can't transfer $0.00, or you could, I guess, but why?

I figure it's better to have the credit and not use it, than to need it and not have it. Though I have toyed on occasion with the notion of taking the cash advance max on all the cards and going to Belize or Brazil. But I don't care to travel. Or to spend the rest of my life far away.

Hehehehe! yup... Well, the problem is that they usually come with high cut legs and a narrow seat, even in the size 18-20 and over. By the time you get down to my sizee 10-12, there's practically no bum left!

By the time I've added together postage and the cost of the cozzi, I might as well make it...

I'm suviving on a selection of Asda £4 a chuck ones that fit where they want and give up without notice! They probably last as well as one decent one would (about 4 months!), but as I'd need to dry a single one in less than 12 hours on a damp night, and they shouldn't go in the tumble dryer, 4 at £4 a chuck suit me better than one at £30.

I closed a bunch of accounts after DH died. He was always willing to open new accounts when he got those danged "pre-approved" applications in the mail. We had 10 or 12 accounts I didn't even know about. I got a credit check, and started closing the ones I KNEW I didn't want. Now I have perhaps 8-10 open accounts, I use only two or three on a regular basis. Any that start charging me an annual fee will be closed immediately. Like you, I figure it's better to have the available credit in case of an emergency, but I always pay my full balance each month.

Apparently, they're glad to get the business. My Amazon card asked me to use it for groceries, etc., and offered to send me an Amazon gift card for every so many dollars I charged. So I switched from using my debit card to using their card, and sure enough, they sent me a gift card, which I promptly used to order some books.

There have been times in my life when having credit and carrying a balance was a big help. I even shopped at a small grocery that would let me pay monthly - not with a card, just running a "tab." It was a lifesaver at that time. I consider us very fortunate that we no longer have to carry balances, even though we rarely ever did in more recent years. I'm also fortunate that I never fell into the trap of "minimum payments" even during more impoverished times.

How about the modulus of elasticity and its relationship to non-ply puckering? (Hey, it's at least sewing!)

Yeah they do give excellent customer service. Some years back, DFIL bought a pair of boots from them at the store in ME when they were up there on vacation; on clearance. Then went home to NM. Well, the boots sat in a box unworn (these were a spare pair, to be saved for future use, otherwise known as emergency boots) for at least 2 years. Well, it's so dry in the New Mexico desert that the soles of the boots dried out badly enough to crack.

He called LL Bean and told them what happened. They said box the boots up and mail them to us; send them COD and we'll pay the postage. So he did. They called him and said we don't make these boots any more, but here's what we replaced them with will those be alright? He said well yeah. They mailed him a pair of the new boots, no charge.

When they say it's made to last, they stand behind it and make sure of it.

I can't wait to hear how Madame Chef des Trolls does with making a swimsuit. I've made them myself and can't wait to see your finishes.
