House boots with rice inserts?

As Melinda mentioned, that wouldn't work with my pedal. But it does sound as if it would work if I weren't needing to maneuver the pedal in order to work.

Thanks!

My telltale sign is that I feel like my bones are cold and I am freezing from the inside out, not from the outside in, not to mention that I tend to fall asleep all the time.

I'm not sleeping well, so I only sleep in three- to four-hour spurts. Then I work for a few hours, then nap. That and the itching skin and ice-cold feet is driving me nuts. I see a new endo next month. Just got to get my feet warmed up in the meantime!

I have some I bought at Walgreens, the brand name is Bed Buddy and they are called Warming Footies. Here are a few web pages where I found them on a quick search. But I bought them at my local Walgreens. I think I got the warming mittens at Linens and Things or Bed, Bath & Beyond. I bought the mittens for a Christmas present.

boot is a very loose fleece boot shaped slipper with an overlapping slit in the double layer bottom, the slit being on the outside/bottom. You place muslin foot shaped pillows inside. The pillows are filled with rice or flax seed that you place in the microwave. I see from the web pages that they are filled with buckwheat. They feel wonderful, but absolutely impossible to walk in. All you could do is sit with them. They are so loose they don't stay on well either. They need some elastic or ties to make them more snug. I plan to sew a ribbon on them to tie them on with. I just have not gotten around to it yet.

If you made the foot shaped muslin pillows you could put on a pair of thin socks, lay the pillows on the bottom of your foot and put on a heavy pair of socks over it. I would fill them with flax seed. Remember it is not washable. I think what makes them stay warm is the oil in the flax seed, and if you were to wash it you would destroy the oil in them. These are a lot smaller than the large heating wraps they sell and the heating wraps call for 2 minutes of microwave time. If I were making this for me I would add a little flax, sew across, add more flax, sew across, etc. This way the flax seed would stay in place all along the foot. Have you seen the shoulder wraps they sell in the mall in some of those little booths in the isles? They have done them this way. They sew them about every inch and fill the "tubes" you make from the sewing. Then they serge across the open end. The heavier the socks you put on the outside the longer the heat would last. I would at least sew pockets every 1 1/2' or so. I would want my toes nice and warm and the filler (flax, rice, etc) would need to stay there.

I have tried the rice filled things, but I think the flax stays warm longer.

My son's bedroom was always cold and our computer used to be in there. I would have ice cubes for feet after working on the computer for any length of time. I started setting my feet on the hot water bottle while I did computer work. This would be another cheap solution. My hot water bottle has a quilted pillow cover. I just pop it in the microwave when it cools down. Be careful, don't put it in too long.

Hope this has helped.

That's exactly what I've been looking for! Unfortunately, I bought two pair last night at the mall ($30 each pair!). I will definitely check out the ones at Walgreens, too, though.

The ones I bought aren't walkers, either. But that's okay, as I am I do transcription and have to sit, anyway. I just want warm feet!

I think you've got the right idea. I think something like that would work better than what I bought.

Yes, that's where I bought my slippers. They did have the shoulder wraps you're referring to.

When these wear out (probably won't last but one season, from the looks of them), if I don't like the looks of the ones Walgreens carries, I'll try making some of my own, doing them in channels, as you suggest.

Do you have any idea where I'd buy flax seed?

That wouldn't work for me, as I have to be able to move my feet with my foot pedal on the transcriber. But it's a good idea for watching TV.

Yes, you have helped. Even though I've already bought some slippers, I am definitely looking into the ones at Walgreens. And if that won't do it, I'll have to do a little sewing of my own. Thanks so much!
