How should I thread an Elna Lotus SP?

I've just bought an Elna Lotus SP on ebay but it doesn't have an instruction book. Can someone who is familiar with this machine tell me how I need to thread it?

Here's an online instruction manual for the Lotus.

I have one, with the books, so yes. :)

Start by pulling up the spool pin on the top right and making sure that the dial below the hand wheel is turned to the --- symbol.

Open up the top and lift the thread guide up, then close the top again.

Place the spool of thread on the spool pin and draw the thread through the thread guide and down the front of the machine.

Pull the thread between the disks of the tension and up to hook round the take-up lever. Make sure the thread is behind the thread guide on the front, both going up and down!

Then thread it through the thread guide at the top of the needle and through the eye from front to back...

Pop the bobbin in the bobbin case so that the holes are UP. Pull the thread through the leaf spring on the bobbin case (a notch at the back), and close the slide plate, making sure that the bobbin thread is sticking out the little hole... Hold the top thread firmly and turn the hand wheel so it picks up the lower thread. Remember to turn the wheel towards you (anti-clockwise), and make sure you have about 9" thread hanging out the back before you start sewing.

Congratulations on acquiring one of the best little machines ever made. I like my two (a TSP and a ZZ) even better than my Featherweight! :) If I get my scanner replaced, I will be scanning the manuals, and you can then have a copy. Don't hold yer breff, however... Long term project! Meanwhile, if you need to know anything, I'll do my best to answer.

Thanks Kate! The machine arrived today, and although I haven't got it to work yet (I still need to get some needles, bobbin, and thread!) I'm really impressed by how solidly built the machine is, and how small!

Thanks to Irene and Beverly too. I couldn't access the online manual that Irene suggested but perhaps it'll come back online in a few days time.... In the meantime I'm thinking of buying a copy of the instruction manual from one of the internet sellers, as Beverly suggested! Thanks everyone.

I love mine, and they are first choice for a lot of the kids when I take them into school. They take standard needles and will tolerate almost any crappy thread! However, I do suggest good quality thread that matches the content of the fabric you are sewing as far as possible.

You can see my magic little machines on my web site in the Sewing Machine Gallery. :)

My ZZ didn't have a manual, but the one for the TSP covered everything needed. :)

Hi Irene,

I went on to the sewingonline site today and the Lotus manual was online! I didn't realise that the Lotus could do so many different stitches! Thank you very much for the link.
