how to apply double-fold bias tape that butts to a corner ?

I am working on some placemats for someone who provided all the materials. They just want the cut edges on two sides to be covered with the matching double-fold bias tape ( the other two sides are finished sides)

So, i was hoping for some opinions/ideas on the best or proper way to finish where bias tape ends at the corners ?

The example handed to me just straight clips tape at the corners which looks a bit raggy/ragged. I wanted to finish it a little better.

I tried tthree corner styles,

1) fold tape under for clean edge and then bind to edge. it was cleaner finish but still ragged. 2) Just folded tape end under and tucked the corner of matt into one of the overlapping sides 3) fold tape under, then start binding the tape on the finished edge by the width of the folded tape, then wrap the bias tape around the raw corner and fold the excess down to corner. This is neat and clean but very tedious.

thanks for any helpful comments and ideas. robb

Dear Robb,

To clean finish the end of a bias-finished edge, open out the tape for the first stitching, and fold the end to the opposite side, and sew through all layers. When you turn the tape to do the second stitching, the ends are already finished.

Robb , I like to pin one side than , go to the edges , and fold them towards the bias ribbon, than fold that corner again so that the edge becomes a diagonal [if both sides of the corner were covered with the bias you woukd have folded it like that !!]. Than sew this , fold over make same diagonal fold in both edges and sew again [ neatest would be to use the zigzag stitich] . mirjam

tape for

Thanks Teri,

I was originally trying to avoid that step for the sake of time as i had lots to do.

Having said that however, as you may well predict, trying to get the mats in the tape and not slipping or looking crooked turned out to be more time consuming as i had no bias-bnder foot that could handle the size of tape being used.

So, i ditched my short-cut / super slow, error prone method and used the proper method you described.

The sewing went alot smoother , faster and cleaner.

Thanks again, sorry for late thank you, robb

Thanks mirjam,

I did not try that with the place mats

*BUT* your suggestion was right on for another project for the same people that wanted some terry cloth washclothes cut into pieces and the edges finished with bias tape.

i prewashed hot, dried hot and then used the mitered/ angled corner affect and zig zag for interest and stretch relief.

thanks again, sorry for late reply.
