how to change brass to antique finish help

I need to replace a zipper in a jacket and have been searching for a zipper. The jacket is a dark red and the zipper teeth are metal in an antique brass finish. The zipper pull is also the dark finish. Since there are lots of pocket zippers on the jacket front a plain shiny brass finish is going to really stand out. Does anyone know how I can "tarnish" this brass to look darker?

I'm going to put in a shorter zipper until I can find the correct length so I also need some sort of online zipper source. I've been searching off and on for quite awhile and haven't found anything yet. Anyone have a good source for zippers?

Thanks,

Thanks, Beverly. I think I will probably go with a molded plastic zipper from zipperstop as it seems a lot more reasonably priced and they just happen to have a few other things I might order. Their shipping charges seem fairly reasonable too.

The other place is way out of my range even though they can custom make any zipper I need.

Thanks, Emily. It's good to know you've had good luck with them but I think they're out of my comfort range in pricing.

You're welcome. I have ordered zippers from both of them and been very well satisfied, both with the products and the service I received.

Beverly,

I wanted to give you an update on the zipper tarnishing and let you know that I ended up soaking the zipper in vinegar for about a day. It changed the shiny finish just enough to blend with the pocket zippers and now that it's in the jacket looks fine. I also waxed the zipper to make sure it works easily after the soaking.

DGD (2 1/2) is very happy with her "new" jacket that grandma fixed for her. My reputation is saved once more thanks to the help I get here.

I'm so glad you found something that worked! And now the solution is archived for future generations. ;-)
