how to make my childs pants have an adjustable waist?

Does anyone know how to make an adjustable waist for childrens pants, like the ones they have in Gap and Gymboree with the elastic and the buttons you make tighter and looser? I have to do this to my daughters pants and want to know what the best and easiest way to go about it is? any suggestions? Em

Make them with a fixed waistband at the front and use buttonhole elastic in the back.

it uses a fixed front waistband & buttonhole elastic for the back waist. these things are my saviour when making trousers for my 6 year old, with a size 4 waist & size 6 height...on bought size 6 trousers, i have to pull in the elastic to the

6th or 7th buttonhole on each side... when pulling it in that much, it helps to fold the elastic back & also button through the first buttonhole. lee

I have bought the elastic with buttonholes spaced along to tighten or loosen the waist in pants from Nancy's Notions and/or Clotilde.
